Alma gives Albion the slip

ALBION, Mich. – Tyler Raab scored a minute after Albion College scored the equalizer and Alma College went on to score a 3-1 victory in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action.

Albion generated pressure early as Shawn Roberts had a shot blocked in the first minute. Aaron Bender stunned the Britons by getting loose for a breakaway in the fifth minute and Alma took a 1-0 lead.

Playing on a turf made slippery from rain throughout the match, scoring chances were limited for the remainder of the first half as shots were 4-2 in favor of Albion in the first 45 minutes.

Albion got on the attack at the beginning of the second half, and Kyle Bourlier forced Alma goalkeeper Nick Strait to make a save. The Britons broke through in the 67th minute as Roberts produced his third goal of the season.

Raab was substituted into the Alma lineup at the goal and it paid off as he knocked in a crossing pass from Matt Sovis for his first goal of the season. Kyle Kansman tacked on the insurance goal in the 75th minute.

Albion finished the afternoon with four shots on goal. Bourlier produced two and Erik Vanfossen had one.

Albion, 5-12-1 overall and 3-10 against MIAA rivals, completes the season Saturday at Calvin.
