HOLLAND, Mich. - Albion College did its best to rally from a two-goal deficit with 17 minutes left, but it rally came up short in a 3-2 setback to Hope College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action.
Joey Zaremski scored in the 14th minute as Albion seized the early 1-0 lead. It was the second goal of the season for the first-year midfielder from Shelby Township.
William Bennink scored his first goal of the season 15 minutes later as Hope sent the contest to halftime with a level score.
Hope continued to attack early in the second half, and it was awarded a corner kick in the 47thminute. Steve Binnig got his head on the corner kick, but he sent the shot over the goal.
Albion goalkeeper Andrew Bobowski, making his first start of the season, made his first save of the night in the 48th minute, but Hope took the lead on a goal by David Porte in the 52nd minute. Hope extended the lead to 3-1 on Jared Wondergem's strike with 17 minutes left.
Albion pushed up from that point and Will Colborn scored his first goal at the collegiate level nearly four minutes later. Albion had an opportunity to get the equalizer as Jason Inglis got his head on a corner kick by Joey Zaremski in the 78th minute, but sent the attempt wide. Kyle Bourlier had a shot blocked in the 86th minute and it led to another corner kick, but the Britons would not get another shot.
Zaremski was credited with four of Albion's nine shots in the contest.
Albion (4-5-1 overall and 2-3 in contests against MIAA rivals) begins its October slate with a Saturday match at Alma College.
