Around the MIAA

Adrian (3-5, 0-0)

Until tonight hosting Alma in their MIAA opener, the Bulldogs have been idle since March 24…scheduled games against Anderson (Ind.) and Olivet were canceled due to roster issues for the opponents…an 18-3 win over Mount Saint Joseph (March 23) was Adrian’s last contest…freshman Chris French is third in MIAA goal-scoring with 29 and total points with 43…fellow first-year attackman Peyton Gasche is fifth in points (41) and second in assists (26)…freshman middie Max Leventis is second in the MIAA in ground balls with 99, which is third in school history for a season…Leventis is also second in face-off wins (125-213) and seventh in percentage (.587)…freshman defenseman Christian Aurand ranks second in the conference with 21 caused turnovers.


Albion (3-7, 1-0)

Alec Palmer (Spring Lake, Mich.) scored five goals, matching his season high, and Jacob Swift (Howell, Mich.) scored four as Albion scored a 15-8 victory over Calvin on the opening day of MIAA action…Jace Conley (Waterford, Mich.) scored three times in Albion’s midweek loss at Elmhurst.

Alma (5-8, 1-1)

Alma began its conference schedule with two home games this week. The Scots fell to Hope Wednesday, 13-9. Senior midfielder Jared Nycz (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a game-high four goals in the contest. Alma bounced back with a 22-9 victory over Kalamazoo College on Saturday. Junior attacker Chase Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio) scored a season-high six goals while junior midfielder Tom Needham (Saline, Mich.) tallied a career-high four scores on the day. Senior goalie Cameron Stelljes (Okemos, Mich.) made nine saves in the win to break the program's all-time save record.


Calvin (7-5, 0-1)

Calvin went 1-1 last week, defeating Kalamazoo 12-9 in a non-conference game on Wednesday before falling to Albion 15-8 on Saturday in the MIAA opener for both teams. In the win over Kalamazoo, Calvin received four goals from sophomore Jacob Gandara and three from senior Austin Bontreger. Sophomore Gerrit Kurtcyz had 12 saves in goal. In the Saturday loss to Albion, Calvin led 3-1 after one quarter of play and was down 6-5 at halftime. Albion pulled away by outscoring the Knights 9-2 in the second half including 5-1 in the fourth quarter. Senior Max Foster led the Calvin scoring attack with three goals while junior Griffin Sparling had three. Kurtcyz had 25 saves for Calvin in goal.


Hope (8-3, 2-0)

The Hope College men's lacrosse team opened MIAA play with victories at Alma and Trine. The Flying Dutchmen received a career-high 18 saves from goalie Nick Schanhals (North Muskegon, Mich.) against Trine. Schanhals now ranks third at Hope in single-game saves. The Flying Dutchmen did not allow a goal in the second half vs. Trine. Junior attacker Max Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich.) totaled seven goals over the two matches.


Kalamazoo (4-4, 0-1)

Kalamazoo dropped its two games with Calvin (12-9) and at Alma (22-9) this week. Freshman Dylan McGorisk led Kalamazoo with five goals and four assists in the two games. McGorisk's 23 goals this season are tenth overall in the MIAA. Jack Smith also tallied five goals over the week for the Hornets while adding one assist. Zach Morales collected 17 ground balls for Kalamazoo; Morales' 37 on the season are tied for eighth in the MIAA. Kalamazoo will host Calvin again on Tuesday for its lone game of the week.


Olivet (0-0, 0-0)

Did not compete.


Trine (5-2, 0-1)

Trine lost to Hope, 16-6, in its only matchup for the week...Tyler Corless led the team in scoring with four points (one goal, three assists)...Anthony Marasco saw the majority of playing time at goalkeeper and had eight saves in 35:30 minutes with a 53.3 save percentage...Justin Gearig led team in ground balls with five.
