Gunnar Elder, Hope Men's Lacrosse Defeats Calvin In MIAA Opener

Gunnar Elder and the Hope College men's lacrosse team kept on rolling despite a 2 ½ week-gap in between matches.

The Flying Dutchmen pushed their program-best win streak to seven matches with a 17-8 win against Calvin Tuesday in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener at Van Andel Stadium.

Hope (7-3) won after playing for the first time since March 26.

Junior Gunnar Elder of East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) matched his career-high with a match-high seven goals. He came within one of matching the single-game varsity record – for any game.

Elder matched the Van Andel Stadium record for goals by a Hope player in a match there.

Elder scored twice during the first period to help stake the Flying Dutchmen a 4-0 lead. Hope never trailed.

Freshman Matthew Harkema of St. Louis Park, Minnesota (St. Louis Park HS) chipped in three goals, while three players collected two apiece: senior Parker Osterink of Longwood, Florida (Seminole HS), sophomore Grant Brogan of East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), and freshman Gino Battaglia of Lebanon, Ohio (Lebanon HS).

Sophomore Joey Williams of Farmington Hills, Michigan (Detroit Catholic Central HS) made 10 saves.

Elder now has 46 goals on the season — third-most in Flying Dutchmen's varsity history. He trails his own record of 49 from the 2015 season and Josh Kamstra (48 in 2013).

Elder's 22 assists are tied for second all time with Niko Pagkanlungan (2013) and Jacob Kamstra (2013).

Elder's 68 points are second-most at Hope behind his 70 from last season.

Elder's 131 career goals and 57 career assists are school records.

Hope returns to action on Thursday, April 14 with a 5 p.m. makeup match at Adrian.
