Hope Men's Lacrosse Posts First Shutout In Victory Against Defiance

Four Hope College men's lacrosse records fell as the Flying Dutchmen recorded their first varsity shutout with a 26-0 win against visiting Defiance, Ohio on Wednesday.

The Flying Dutchmen set a team school record for fewest goals allowed in a match as well as Van Andel Stadium records for most goals scored in a half and a quarter.

Junior Gunnar Elder of East Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) broke the Van Andel Stadium record for most assists in a match.

Hope improved to 2-3 overall with the nonleague win. It was the Flying Dutchmen's second consecutive victory.

Two freshmen led the second-highest scoring game in team history with a career-high five goals apiece: Gino Battaglia of Lebanon, Ohio (Lebanon HS) and Matthew Harkema of St. Louis Park, Minnesota (St. Louis Park HS).

Senior Parker Osterink of Longwood, Florida (Seminole HS) and junior Zach Weber of Ann Arbor, Michigan (Pioneer HS) chipped in three goals apiece.

Twelve different players scored at least one goal for the Flying Dutchmen.

Elder totaled six assists to surpass the previous Van Andel Stadium assist record of four that he shared with two other players: Niko Pagkanlungan (2014 vs. Dubuque, Iowa) and Jacob Kamstra (2013 vs. Calvin). Elder had four assists against Calvin last season.

Elder came within two assists of the school record of eight assists held by Jacob Kamstra (2014 vs. Centenary).

Elder also collected two goals to give him a team-high 18 on the season.

The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and led 20-0 at halftime.

Hope passed the previous bests of 10 goals in a quarter and 16 in a half from the 2014 Dubuque match.

Hope returns to action on Saturday, March 19 at Muskingum, Ohio with a 7 p.m. nonleague match.
