Third-Seeded Hope Wins OT Thriller to Defend MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament Title

The third-seeded Hope College men's basketball team made its way through the competition to claim the 2024 MIAA Tournament trophy, finishing the week with a 72-68 overtime victory over No.-1 seed Trine University at the MTI Center on February 24.

Following their victory, the Flying Dutchmen have an overall record of 22-6, including an 11-3 mark in regular-season play.

Hope was led by Tanner Wiegerink with a game-best 19 points and eight rebounds.  Three other Flying Dutchmen scored in double digits including TJ McKenzie (15 points), Gabe Quillan (13 points), and Clayton Dykhouse (12 points).

Hope finished the contest with a field-goal percentage of .450 (27-of-60).  The Flying Dutchmen had a 44-42 edge over the Thunder in rebounds.

Trine has an overall record of 23-4 with a 12-2 mark in leage play.

Nate Tucker (14 points), Cortez Garland (13 points), and Aisan Smylie (10 points) all scored in double digits and totaled seven rebounds each.  Fred Garland also scored in double digits with a total of 12 points.  The 2024 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year, Emmanuel Megnanglo, blocked a game-high four shots.

Trine had a 14-12 edge in assistsand led 19-2 in fastbreak points.

Hope receives the league's automatic bid into the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.  The championship selection show will be live streamed at NCAA.com on Monday, February 26.
