Calvin University sophomore center Jalen Overway was named Division III National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers of America (USBWA) on Tuesday. He was also named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.

The honors come one day after Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was named MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Overway won the awards after a stellar week in which he averaged 28.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52.6 percent from the field in wins over Hope College (69-61 on Wednesday, January 17) and Alma College (89-63 on Saturday, January 20).

In the win over Alma, Overway scored a career-high 42 points on 16-27 shooting, including 4-4 from beyond the three-point arc. He also grabbed 13 rebounds on the way to his 10th double-double of the season in 17 games.

The 42 points from Overway marked the first 40-point game for a Calvin men's basketball player since 1993, when Chris Knoester scored 40 points. It also tied for the fifth-highest single-game total in program history.

This season, Overway leads the Knights and the MIAA in points per game (20.6) and is tied for the conference lead in rebounds per game (9.9).

This marks the second time Overway has been named Division III National Player of the Week by the USBWA, as well as the second time he was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.

The fourth-ranked Calvin men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 24, when it hosts seventh-ranked Trine University in a battle of top-10 teams in the most recent D3hoops.com poll. That game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM.
