Calvin and Trine Men's Basketball Share 2024 MIAA Regular-Season Championship Title

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. -- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) announced the Calvin University and Trine University's men's basketball teams as the 2024 regular-season co-champions after each earning a 12-2 mark in league contests.

This is the second regular-season title under head coach Bill Sall who is in his fourth season leading the Knights.

Sophomore center Jalen Overway led the Knights by over an average of 10 points with 21.1 points per game, while senior forward Uchenna Egekeze averaged 10.8 points per contest and sophomore center Owen Varnado had 10.2 points per game.  Overway also leads the squad with an average of 11.4 rebounds per game.

This is the third league championship title for the Thunder under head coach Brooks Miller who is in his thirteenth season at the helm of the program.

Four Trine players averaged double digits including senior guard Cortez Garland (14.0 PPG), junior guard Fred Garland (12.9 PPG), senior forward Brent Cox (11.9 PPG), junior guard Aidan Smylie (11.8 PPG).  Senior forward Emmanuel Megnanglo led the Thunder in rebounds with an average of 6.8 boards per contest and 3.1 blocks per game.

The six-team 2024 MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament will begin with the First Round games this Tuesday.  The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will serve as hosts, while the first- and second-seeded teams receive a bye.  Semifinals are slated for Friday, February 23, at the No. 1 seed's institution and the championship game will take place on Saturday, February 24.
