The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) basketball programs have come together throughout the season to recognize the life of Tyler Edwards.  Edwards was a former basketball student-athlete and coach at Alma College.  He was a son, grandson, brother, friend, mentor, coach, teammate, and, most importantly, a man of faith.

When discussing Tyler’s life after he passed away, one of his former teammates said, "We should all try to be like Tye.”

So, what does it mean to Be Like Tye?

Tye was someone that could truly be a friend to anyone. If he met you, he would get to know you for you. No judgment, no pre-conceived opinions. He would want to have a great conversation and be your friend.

He did not care what someone looked like, where they were from, how much money they had, or how talented they were.  If you were around him, you were a part of his family, and it was his goal to pull the best version of you out of you.

ABOUT TYE
Tye was a 4 year member of the men's basketball program at Alma College. During his time with the team, Tye was named to the All-MIAA Second Team as a Senior, and helped to lead the Scots in their most historic season in program history as a Junior. In 2016 Alma achieved their first postseason berth in program history. The Scots would make a run to the Elite Eight, before ending their season as one of the best teams in Division III. This run would not have been possible without the leadership and work ethic of Tye.

After graduation, Tye moved into coaching as a member of the Alma College coaching staff. For several seasons he helped to coach and mentor the Scots, before moving on to coach at Comstock Park High School. He was the head coach of the boys basketball team until his passing in 2022. Tye's character, and actions, embodied Alma's core values of Integrity, Passion, and Serving. He truly lived and represented what it means to be an Alma College Scot.

The Tyler Edwards "Be Like Tye" Memorial Scholarship
A scolarship was created to help honor Tye, the impacts that he had on all those who intercated with him, and the legacy that he left behind at Alma. Contributions to The Tyler Edwards Memorial Scholarship will support historically underserved students from Grand Rapids or Flint-area high schools or community colleges who choose to attend Alma College and who major in business or health administration, Tye's two favorite subject areas. This new scholarship is named after Tye with the goal of fully endowing the fund so that it lasts forever in his honor.
