Calvin freshman Jalen Overway has added another lofty honor to his growing collection of post-season awards.
The Holland Christian High School graduate was named an NABC Third Team All-American this afternoon, becoming the first freshman in Calvin men's basketball history to be named an All-American.
On Tuesday, Overway was named the D3hoops.com Region 7 Freshman of the Year as well as to the D3hoops.com All-Region 7 Team while also earning NABC All-District 7 honors.
Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had a standout freshman campaign for the Knights, averaging 18.6 points and 9.9 rebounds a game while connecting on 53.3 percent of his field goal attempts.
During the year he hit for double-digits in scoring 26 of 27 game while amassing 13 double-doubles. Overway hit the 30-point plateau twice during the season including a 34-point outburst in a 59-56 win over No. 3 UW-Oshkosh on November 11.
He was named to the D3hoops.com National Team of the Week in early November and was later named the U.S. Basketball Writer's Division III National Player of the Week later in December. He was also named MIAA Player of the Week twice during the season. He later was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and landed a spot on the All-MIAA First Team.
Overway helped the Calvin men's basketball team post an overall record of 22-5 and claim the MIAA regular season conference championship with a 13-1 league record.
"This is a great honor for a wonderful young man," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall who was himself, a two-time NABC All-American as a player at Calvin. "Jalen has worked extremely hard and put together a tremendous season in his first year of collegiate basketball. The best part about Jalen is that he is a team-oriented person and because of that, I know his teammates are thrilled to see him recognized like this on a national stage. It's a great honor for Jalen and a great honor for the Calvin men's basketball program."
Overway is the 12th individual in Calvin men's basketball history to earn All-America honors.
