Calvin's Jalen Overway Tabbed Region 7 Rookie of the Year by D3hoops.com; Four MIAA Men's Basketball Players Receive All-Region Recognition

Four men's basketball players from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) were announced to All-Region 7 teams by D3hoops.com, including Calvin University freshman Jalen Overway who was deemed Rookie of the Year.

Overway, a center for the Knights, earned the title of Region 7 Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Region after leading Calvin to an overall record of 22-5 (13-1 MIAA) during his inaugural campaign.  He was previously voted the 2023 MIAA Most Valuable Player and earned a spot on the All-MIAA First Team.  Overway concluded the 2022-23 campaign as the league's leader with 188 field goals, 118 free throws, an .849 field-goal percentage, 91 offensive rebounds, 177 defensive boards, 268 total rebounds, 9.9 boards per contest, 501 points, and 18.6 points per game.  He hit double-digits in scoring 26-of-27 games and totaled 13 double-doubles.

Hope senior guard Evan Thomas was selected to the All-Region 7 Second Team after assisting the Flying Dutchmen to an overall record of 20-10 (10-4 MIAA) and the MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament crown.  Thomas earned a spot on the All-MIAA First Team for the second-straight season.  He concluded the season top six in the MIAA with 83 free throws, a .748 free-throw percentage, 6.6 rebounds per game, and 15 points per contest.

Uchenna Egekeze, a junior forward at Calvin, was announced to the All-Region Third Team by D3hoops.com.  Egekeze was voted the 2023 MIAA Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season and is now a two-time All-MIAA honoree.  He wrapped up the 2022-23 campaign as the league's leader with 59 steals and is fourth in the MIAA in playing 32.7 minutes per game.

Trine senior forward Brent Cox received Third Team All-Region 7 honors after assisting the Thunder to an overall record of 22-4 (12-2 MIAA).  Cox became a two-time All-MIAA honoree this season with a spot on the First Team.  He concluded the year top five in the conference with 167 field goals, 445 points, and 17.1 points per contest.  Cox scored a career-high 26 points on Senior Day versus Adrian College.  His 431 career rebounds places his fifth in Trine's NCAA DIII era, while his 1,089 career points places him eighth.

Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools, and schools and conferences were each contacted multiple times as the season wound down to remind them to make their players eligible. There were 798 players nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region.

Players from these lists are eligible for the D3hoops.com All-America teams. The men's team will be released March 18 at the national championship game.
