Around the MIAA 

Adrian (13-10, 7-5)

The Adrian College men’s basketball team finished 2-0 on the week. The Bulldogs defeated Hope College 71-65 and the MIAA top seeded Albion College 79-78. After the week, the Bulldogs currently hold the third place spot in the conference standings. Jordan Harris finished with 25 points against Hope followed by Jeremy Kalonji and Trey Helinski who each finished with 12. Harris and Helinski had 22-point performances against Albion on Saturday. Ke’Shaun Wyatt-Morris recorded a double-double finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.


Albion (19-4, 10-2)

Albion went 1-1 last week, culminating with a 79-78 nailbiter at Adrian Feb. 15. Adrian converted a layup in the game's final seconds to secure the win. Caden Ebelin gled all scorers with 24 points to go with 15 rebounds, which was also a game high. Already guaranteed a share of the MIAA Championship, Albion secures the 2020 MIAA regular season title with one win in their last final two games.


Alma (12-11, 6-6)

The men's basketball team defeated Olivet College 96-88 Feb. 12 evening in an emotional matchup. Sam Hargraves, Olivet's head coach, coached at Alma from 2011-19. Ryan Stevens (Lowell, Mich.) scored a career-high 27 points to go along with 10 assists. Kyle Woodruff (Grand Blanc, Mich.) had 21 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. Jack Poling (Portland, Ore.) scored 15 points and Brandon Rake (Whitehall, Mich.) grabbed 10 rebounds. The game was tightly contested all the way through, much like the previous matchup. Alma led for the majority of the game and pulled away in the final few minutes. Its biggest lead in the game was 13, which it got with two minutes left. Alma fell to Calvin later in the week.


Calvin (14-9, 8-4)

The Calvin men’s basketball team went 2-0 this past week. The Knights won in an epic comeback at Trine with a score of 78-71 and won at home against Alma with a score of 87-76. Senior Derrick DeVries continues his amazing season with another fantastic week. He had a total of 55 points this week including a 37-point outing against Alma. He also shot 25-28 from the free throw line and grabbed a total of 30 rebounds. Calvin now moves to 14-9 on the season with a 8-4 record in the MIAA.


Hope (11-12, 4-8)

The Hope College men's basketball team lost last week at Adrian College, 71-65, on Wednesday, and at home to Kalamazoo College, 91-72. Junior forward Preston Granger (Lansing, Mich.) averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds over the two-game stretch.


Kalamazoo (6-17, 3-9)

Kalamazoo began the week with a 96-70 loss at home to Albion. Tanner Blyly led the team with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Fellow senior Ben Reiter added 20 points in the game and reached 1,000 points in his Kalamazoo career. To end the week, Kalamazoo picked up a big 91-72 win at Hope. Blyly again led the way with 19 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Tre Humes scored 19 points on six of seven shooting as he also reached 1,000 collegiate points. Merritt Hamann recorded a season-high 15 points in the win. The Hornets wrap up their regular season this week with Senior Night at home against Calvin on Wednesday before traveling to Alma on Saturday.


Olivet (16-7, 3-9)

Olivet had a 1-1 record last week. The Comets lost 96-88 Wednesday night at Alma College before bouncing back to beat Trine (Ind.) University, 82-78, Saturday afternoon at the Upton Center Gymnasium in Olivet. Against Alma, junior Eddie Thigpen led all scorers with a season-high 33 points. Freshman Britton Angell joined him in double figures with 21 points. Against Trine, Thigpen and Angell finished with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Junior Chris Martin had 13 points. Senior Keyon Rainey scored 12 points, including what proved to be the game-winning basket with 45.7 seconds left. He also had a game-high nine rebiunds, six assists and three steals.


Trine (13-10, 7-5)

Fell in both matchups for the week against Calvin (78-71) and Olivet (82-78)...Maurice Hunter averaged a double-double for the week with 15.0 ppg and 11.0 rpg...Langston Johnson averaged a team-best 22.0 ppg in two games.
