Around the MIAA (for games through Feb. 2)

Adrian (3-17, 0-9)

The Bulldogs came up short against Trine Saturday, falling 94-53 in Adrian's lone game last week. Junior forward Jeremy Kalonji, who had a game-high 19 points against Trine, is in the MIAA with a 17.3 scoring average.


Albion (14-6, 7-2)

At 14-6, Albion is a win shy of matching its most victories since going 15-12 in the 2010-11 season…Albion shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) against Alma, the first time it has shot better than 50 percent against a MIAA rival this season…Albion did not commit a turnover in the second half against Alma, and finished with a season-low three for the game…G Nathaniel Collins (West Bloomfield, Mich.) scored a season-high 20 (7-8 FG, 5-6 3-point FG). It was one shy of his career high, set at Alma last season, and he has three career games against Alma with at least 19 points… Collins and Quinton Armstrong (Lansing, Mich.), who finished with 14 points, helped Albion finish with a 36-11 edge in bench points…G Jamezell Davis (Ypsilanti, Mich.) stuffed the box score with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Alma (4-16, 3-6)

The Scots dropped an 88-77 decision to Albion on Saturday (Feb. 2) afternoon. Freshman Cole Kleiver (Williamston, Mich.) scored 24 points on six made threes, adding six rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Steven Harvey (Grand Rapids, Mich.) tallied 18 points and nine rebounds. The Scots led briefly in the second half, but Albion shot 50-percent from behind the arc and only turned the ball over three times en route to the win.


Calvin (10-10, 5-4)

On Saturday, Calvin traveled to Hope for the 200th meeting between the two rivals. In front of a crowd of nearly 3,600 fans, Calvin recorded an 82-80 win to claim its first regular season sweep of Hope since 2015. Senior Austin Bykerk had 18 points and senior Alex Bos a career-high 17 points to lead the Knight in victory. 


Hope (11-9, 4-5)

The Flying Dutchmen hosted the historic 200th game in The Rivalry with Calvin Feb. 2, drawing a sold-out DeVos Fieldhouse and thousands of fans across the country to satellite viewing parties. Hope was edged, 82-80, despite 24 points from guard Riley Lewis (Williamston, Mich.) and 23 points and 14 rebounds from center Preston Granger (Lansing, Mich.).


Kalamazoo (6-14, 3-6)

The Hornets were victorious in their only game last week. Kalamazoo knocked off Olivet 82-81 Saturday on a Ben Reiter buzzer-beater. Reiter led Kalamazoo with 23 points and four steals. Tanner Blyly added 19 points with six rebounds and five assists. Drew Sheckell scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting with four assists. The win moved Kalamazoo into a tie for sixth place in the MIAA.


Olivet (10-10, 6-3)

The Comets lost their only game last week, 82-81 at home to Kalamazoo. Olivet took an 81-79 lead with eight seconds left before the Hornets made a three-pointer with 0.9 ticks remaining. Junior Trevor Manuel finished the game with 23 points and eight rebounds. Senior Tracy Edmond scored 18 points and dished out seven assists. Senior Colin Jones posted a double-double with 11 points and game-high 12 rebounds.


Trine (15-5, 8-1)

The Thunder posted a 94-53 win over Adrian on Saturday, with Pete Smith's 18 points leading three players in double figures for Trine, who shot 63.9 percent from the field against the Bulldogs.
