Hope Men's Basketball Surges Past Messiah At RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic

Center Brock Benson and the nationally ranked Hope College men's basketball team obliterated a familiar slow start to a game.

Four Benson dunks later, including one off an alley-oop, the Flying Dutchmen powered their way to an 80-58 win against Messiah, Pennsylvania on Tuesday at the RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic in Orlando, Florida.

Hope, ranked No. 4 in the latest D3Hoops.com Division III poll, raised its record to 9-1 overall by extending its win streak to a season-high six games.

The Flying Dutchmen go for their second RDV Sportsplex D3 Classic title on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they face Beloit, Wisconsin.

Benson scored a season-high 19 points to lead Hope. The senior from Willowbrook, Illinois (Hinsdale South HS) shared game-high scoring honors with Messiah guard Micah Brown.

Benson helped the Flying Dutchmen overcome a 19-8 deficit 6 minutes, 19 seconds into the first half. Hope rallied to lead 31-30 at halftime, then erupted for 49 second-half points.

Junior forward Harrison Blackledge of Canton, Ohio (Hoover HS) added 16 points off the bench while shooting 6-of-7 from the floor. He netted 12 points during the second half.

Senior guard Ben Gardner of Carmel, Indiana (Carmel HS) chipped in 14 points and four steals.

The Flying Dutchmen forced 22 Messiah turnovers in their first game against the Falcons.

On Wednesday, Hope plays Beloit for the third time ever but the first since 1955. Beloit leads the series 2-0.
