Hussein makes impressive debut

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Newcomer Jibreel Hussein scored 17 of his game-high 26 points over the final 20 ½ minutes of the game as Albion College erased a 17-point deficit in posting a 70-66 victory over the College of Mount Saint Joseph.

Travis Combs knocked down a 3-point basket and Erik Edwards tacked on an old-fashioned 3-point play as Mount Saint Joseph built a double-digit lead, 19-8, eight minutes into the game. Liam Rabe contributed the next five points as the margin ballooned to 16, 24-8, midway through the first half.

Hussein hit a pair of shots from the perimeter to pull Albion with 12, 40-28, at halftime.

Five Britons scored during a 9-0 run as the deficit was reduced to a point, 47-46, when Jordan Herron finished a layup with 12:43 to play.

Albion forged the lead – its first since the opening possession of the game – when Travell Oakes knocked down a pair of free throws. The Britons led 50-49 midway through the second half.

Albion trailed 64-60 with 3 ½ minutes to play, but Hussein scored the next eight points by hitting a 3-point shot and a layup and going 3-of-4 from the line.

Hussein's 26 points were the most by a Briton since Kolin Kazen produced 28 in a Jan. 18, 2012 victory over Kalamazoo College. Hussein was 9-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

Sophomore guards Robert Ryan and Corey Wheeler chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Albion will complete its trip to the Queen City with a Saturday game against Berea.
