Alma, MI – Alma College Football hosted SUNY Cortland on Saturday in the NCAA Quarterfinals. In an offensive shootout, Alma fell to Cortland but a final of 58-41.

Alma was the first to the scoreboard. The Scots offense was out on the field first, and needed 6 plays to go 82 yards, with the scoring play coming from a 47-yard Carter St. John to Devon Frenchko strike to make it 6-0 after a failed 2 point try. Cortland answered with a touchdown. The Scots put the offense back out, and walked right back down the field. 11 plays, 88 yards, and a 1-yard Jordan Williams scoring play later, it was 13-6. Once again, Cortland answered in kind to tie things at 20.

Alma moved the ball down the field once more, with St. John going down after a designed QB run. Enter Trent Devereaux. The senior came in and capped off the scoring drive with a touchdown pass to Zach Poff to put Alma right back on top at 20-13. The visitors scored a pair of touchdowns to put the Scots down on the scoreboard at 27-20. Alma strung together a 9-play, 67-yard drive ending with a Carter St. John touchdown rush.

Cortland put Alma back down at 34-27, and it looked as though the Scots would go into halftime trailing. Devereaux had other plans, bringing out the long ball to a wide open Ty Lotterman, who ran the remainder of the 55 yards to score, tying things up 34-34 at half.

The opposition scored a pair of touchdowns to open the third quarter, pushing ahead by 14. Alma put up one more touchdown on a trick play, with Ty Lotterman grabbing a 15 yard score from Kahleel Brown.

Despite the best effort of the Scots, Cortland pulled away to win 58-41.

The passing leader for Alma was Carter St. John, who went 14 for 20 with 201 yards and a touchdown. Trent Devereaux was 2 for 2 with a pair of touchdown passes. Kahleel Brown was the leading rusher with 103 yards on 17 attempts. Ty Lotterman had a pair of grabs for 70 yards to lead receivers, with both being touchdowns. Drew Humm led defenders with 8 total tackles in the game.

Alma ends a historic season at 12-1. The Scots await postseason accolades, and the finalization of numerous record books entries to come after championship season ends.
