Alma's Carter St. John and Jason Couch Receive D3football.com Specialty Awards; 21 MIAA Players Announced as 2023 All-Region Honorees

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) is represented by 21 student-athletes on the 2023 D3football.com All-Region 4 Team, which was released on Wednesday, December 6.  Additionally, Alma College head coach Jason Couch was selected as the D3football.com Region 4 Coach of the Year for and Scots quarterback Carter St. John was named D3football.com Region 4 Offensive Player of the Year.

In his sixth season at the helm of the Scots football program, Couch led Alma to an overall record of 12-1 and a quarterfinal appearance in the NCAA Division III Football Championship for the first time in program history.  Couch was previously selected as the 2023 MIAA Football Coach of the Year after helping the Scots to their second-straight league title with an unblemished conference record of 6-0.  He earned the regional title of Coach of the Year in 2022 following his program's record-breaking season.

Sophomore Carter St. John assisted the Scots on their journey to the NCAA quarterfinal.  He was voted the 2023 MIAA Most Valuable Offensive Player at the end of the regular-season campaign.  St. John wrapped up the season as the conference leader with a .702 completion percentage, 3,084 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, and a pass-efficiency rating of 208.9.  He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on September 26 and was selected as the MIAA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week twice this season.

Along with St. John, five players from the MIAA were announced to the All-Region 4 First Team:  Albion College's Nick Fannon, Alma's Abrahm Evans, Devon Frenchko and Odin Soffredine, and Hope College's Dylan Clem.

Those who were named to the All-Region 4 Second Team include Adrian College's Jonathan Sasiela, Briton Chris Bowman, Drew Humm and Zach Poff of Alma, Hope's Nick Flegler, and Trine University's Jamon Gibson.

Representing the MIAA on the All-Region 4 Third Team are Albion's Kye Bristow and Larry Platt, Alma's JB Couch, Bryce Fredenburg, Bryce Kempf, Jerome Roberson, Hunter Sanderson and Reese Townsend, and Trine's Jackson Linback.

NCAA Division III realigned Division III football into six regions in 2021. Region 4 includes the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the North Coast Athletic Conference and the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The teams, selected in balloting by Region 4 sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 169 nominations by full Division III member schools. A total of 79 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 15, in D3football.com’s pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl 50.
