Defense Dominates as Football Wins Big at Home Opener

Alma, MI -  Alma Football continued their season on Saturday September 10th, against Manchester University. The Scots took victory by a score of 49-7.

Alma scored early and often in the first half. Eddie Williams took a handoff 33 yards to the endzone on the opening drive of the game to put the Scots up 7-0. They didn't look back. Just over two minutes later, it was Vernell Smith Jr. rumbling his way 29 yards to the endzone to put the Scots up 14-0. Smith would strike again with just under 6:30 to go in the first, this time from 6 yards out. The hosts very nearly scored again in the first, but Williams would punch the ball into the endzone just 26 seconds into the second quarter. Smith Jr. would score his third touchdown of the game on a 58-yard pass from Carter St. John just 2 minutes later, and a Davin Reif 2-yard keeper would put the Scots up 42-0 as the teams headed into halftime. The second half produced much more tame offensive play, as the visitors would score once in the third quarter, followed by a William Burnett touchdown in the 4th to cap the scoring. At the final horn, the score read 49-7 in favor of Alma.

Alma's defense came out flying, and didn't lose any of their momentum from last week. The Scots notched 3 turnovers in the contest, in the form of 1 interception and 2 fumbles. Jack Kretzschmar recorded his 9th career interception, tying him for 11thmost all-time in Alma history. Trever Salani led the Scots in tackles with 6.

Offensively, it was Carter St. John who led the Scots through the air. The freshman excelled in his first career start for Alma, completing 19 of 24 for 278 yards and a touchdown before being pulled from the game. Eddie Williams paced the Alma ground game, with 10 carries for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns. Smith Jr. led all receivers with 58 yards on his lone grab of the game, which resulted in a touchdown.

The Scots move to 2-0 on the year, and now head back out on the road against Anderson University on September 17th.
