On Wednesday, Kalamazoo's David Vanderkloot (Sr., OL, Bannockburn, Ill.) and Trine's Evan Wyse (Sr., QB, Archbold, Ohio) received honors for their achivement both in competition and in the classroom with their selection to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America Football Second Team, the national sports communications organization announced.
Vanderkloot, a three-year starter for the Hornets, has compiled a 3.93 GPA in religion & English literature/cultural studies. His involvement in the community include serving as a tutor for Communities in Schools, and a volunteer with Special Olympics. Vanderkloot is the first Kalamazoo football Academic All-American since 2009.
Wyse, the 2017 MIAA Offensive Most Valuable Player and Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist, has a 3.62 in mechanical engineering. The senior quarterback guided the Thunder to a 10-0 regular season record and the MIAA Championship.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale and must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution as well as selected a first-team All-District student-athlete.
