Kalamazoo Wins 2022 MIAA Baseball Tournament

HOLLAND, Mich. -- Kalamazoo went 3-0 over the week to claim the 2022 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Baseball Tournament title.

Top-seeded Hope opened the tournament with a 2-1 win versus fourth-seeded Calvin.  The 2022 MIAA Position Player of the Year Evan Maday and teammate Kainan Bayn both scored a run for the Flying Dutchmen, while Second Team All-MIAA honoree J.C. Fortmann earned the lone run for the Knights.

No. 2-seed Kalamazoo topped third-seeded Adrian on Thursday, 7-6.  Noah Hecht led the way for the Hornets with three runs.  Kalamazoo's First Team honoree Cooper Mills and Max Gordon, along with Adrian's Thomas Miller and Aaron Valentine, each had two RBIs.  Six different players each had a run for the Bulldogs.

In game three, Kalamazoo edged Hope 11-10 in 10 innings to secure a spot in the championship contest.  Two-time All-MIAA first baseman Spencer Baldwin totaled a team high of three runs for the Hornets, while First Team All-MIAA honoree Blake Bean, Max Gordon, and Ben Chosid each had two runs.  Evan Maday and Second Team honoree Al Money each scored two runs for the Flying Dutchmen.  Gordon and Maday each tallied three RBIs.

Calvin notched an 11-8 victory over Adrian on Thursday.  Both Knights Ryan Peterson and three-time All-MIAA honoree Rick Padilla had a game-best three runs, while Bulldogs Kevin Cardentey and Ty Peck each tallied a team high of two runs.  Calvin's Andrew Hung totaled a game-best three RBIs.

Hope defeated Calvin, 14-6, to earn the other spot in the championship matchup.  Kainan Bayn and All-MIAA honoree Brant Kym led the Flying Dutchmen each with a game-high three runs and four RBIs, while two-time All-MIAA player Spencer Cable, Caleb Regan, and Al Money totaled two runs each.  On Calvin's side, six different players earned a run and Nick Vogel had three runs batted in.

In the championship game, Kalamazoo notched a 16-2 victory over Hope for the tournament crown.  Ben Chosid led the Hornets with a game high of three runs, while Blake Bean had three RBIs.  Kainan Bayn and Brant Kym tallied the lone runs for the Flying Dutchmen.

Kalamazoo receives the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.  The baseball championship field will be announced during the selection show on Monday, May 16.
