Eight MIAA Baseball Players Selected to All-Region Teams by ABCA

On May 31, eight players from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) were announced to 2022 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Region teams by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. III All-America Committee

ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. III All-America teams will be announced on Thursday, June 2.  The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams for all divisions will be announced Wednesday, June 22.

The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school. ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams were first recognized in 2007.

Hope's Evan Maday is the lone MIAA player on the All-America First Team.

Fifth-year senior outfielder Maday was named the 2022 MIAA Position Player of the Year after leading the Flying Dutchmen to the regular-season title.  The four-time All-MIAA honoree concluded the year as the conference leader in triples (7), home runs (11), total bases (121), batting average (.436), and slugging percentage (.812).

Hope's Sean Hoey and Brant Kym, and Kalamazoo's Blake Bean and Spencer Baldwin were all named to the All-America Second Team.

Senior pitcher Hoey was selected as the 2022 MIAA Pitcher of the Year and received First-Team All-MIAA honors for the first time in his career.  Hoey closed out the year as the league leader in multiple categories:  games started (12), wins (9), innings pitched (70.2), strikeouts (80), strikeouts per game (10.19), triples allowed (1), at-bats against (263), and earned run average (3.18).  Hoey set a Hope record for wins in a single season.

Kym, a fifth-year senior, earned a spot on the All-MIAA First Team for the first time in his career.  The shortstop had career bests in both batting average (.468) and RBIs (41) this season.  In conference play alone, Kym led the league with 41 hits, 13 doubles, 33 runs batted in, and a .500 hitting percentage.

Bean, a senior outfielder, became a two-time All-MIAA recipient prior to leading the Hornets to the 2022 MIAA Tournament crown and the league's autmatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.  Bean is the conference leader with 59 runs, 18 doubles, and a .573 on-base percentage.

Senior first baseman Baldwin has now received All-MIAA honors twice in his career.  The Hornet concluded the year second in the MIAA in hits (66), home runs (9), 114 total bases, and runs batted in (47).

Adrian's Don Goodes, Calvin's Rick Padilla, and Kalamazoo's Doug Propson were announced to the All-America Third Team.

Goodes, a junior outfielder, received All-MIAA First Team honors for the first time in his career after assisting the Bulldogs to a third-place finish in MIAA play.  Overall, Goodes finished the season second in the conference with 17 doubles and five triples.  He was also third with 22 stolen bases.

Padilla became a three-time All-MIAA recipient after leading the Knights to an 11-10 league record.  The senior catcher concluded the year in the conference's top five for the following categories:  doubles (14), batting average (.385), and runners caught stealing (13).

Senior third baseman Doug Propson earned All-MIAA honors for the second time in his career this season.  Propson finished the season as the MIAA leader in games (40), plate appearances (201), at bats (178), hits (67), and runs batted in (52).  The Hornet was also second with 53 runs.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 13,000 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth.
