CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- After advancing to another day of the NCAA DIII College World Series, the Adrian College baseball team faced elimination for the second day in a row. The Bulldogs took on the No. 1 ranked Washington University Bears at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs scored early and often, but couldn't come away with the win as they were eliminated and wrapped up their season. Adrian finished the 2021 campaign with a 37-10 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

= WashU took an early 1-0 lead in the first which was quickly responded by a RBI single from Gunner Rainey to tie the game. 

= The Bears scored four in the second to regain the lead. Adrian scored one in the second on a WashU error and one in the third on a single from Sean O'Keefe.

=WashU scored more in the fourth to lead 11-3. Rainey singled in another run followed by a single from Kevin Cardentey to make it an 11-5 ballgame. 

= After the Bulldogs held WashU scoreless with the help of Austin Frederick, the Bears found a late groove and extended the lead to 16-5.

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs' season comes to an end in the College World Series after making it for the second time in school history and the first since 2008. With the exception of the shortened 2020 COVID season, the Bulldogs have put together 30-win season every year since 2008.


Adrian vs. Johns Hopkins

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Facing elimination, the Adrian College baseball team exploded for 12 runs on offense to defeat Johns Hopkins University The Bulldogs took an 11-0 lead, but allowed the Blue Jays to chip away and make it a ballgame. Adrian's bullpen held on late and Spencer Ford recorded a save in the ninth to win 12-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

= The Bulldogs scored first on a RBI single from Kevin Cardentey in the second inning. 

= Gunner Rainey homered in the third to extend the lead to 3-0.

= The Bulldogs offense batted around in the fourth inning scoring five runs. Sean O'Keefe doubled in a pair of runs which was followed by a bases loaded walk from Gunner Rainey and a two RBI single from Tristin Richardson to lead 8-0.

= Thomas Miller and Rainey added doubles in the fifth to lead 11-0.

= Johns Hopkins chipped away in the fifth scoring four runs followed by two more in the sixth.

= Adrian grabbed some insurance on a single from Richardson to lead 12-6, but the Blue Jays didn't go away yet. Johns Hopkins went on to score one in the seventh and two more in the eighth lead trail by three.

= Spencer Ford came on in the ninth and recorded the save with a 1-2-3 inning with the help of a sliding catch from Brandon Cooper in left field.

= Maxwell Denny got the start on the mound for Adrian throwing 4.2 innings allowing four runs with three strikeouts. Trey Miller recorded his third win of the season in relief.

= With today's win, the Bulldogs tie the program record for most wins in a single season with 37.

= Kevin Cardentey finished 4-for-5 on the day with a RBI while Gunner Rainey went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and a home run. Sean O'Keefe added a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs and a double.


Adrian vs. St. Thomas (Minn.)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Adrian College baseball team played in their first NCAA DIII College World Series game since 2008. The Bulldogs took on the St. Thomas Tommies from Minnesota in the first day on the World Series. The Bulldogs took an early 5-0, but the offense came to a hault on the scoring end as they dropped the contest 7-5 on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

= Thomas Miller led off the game with a double to put the first runner aboard. Kevin Cardentey later drove in the first run of the game for Adrian to take a 1-0 lead early.

= With the bases loaded in the first, Joe Casale cleared the bases with a double to the left center gap to lead 4-0 after the first half inning.

= The Bulldogs scored again in the third on an error by St. Thomas with two outs to lead 5-0.

= St. Thomas began to battle back by scoring one in the third, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth to tie the game.

= The Tommies took the lead in the seventh and extended it to 7-5 in the eighth inning.

= The Bulldogs had opportunities in the top of the ninth, but was unable to bring anybody home and lost 7-5.

= Pierce Banks made the start for Adrian going 4.2 innings allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

= Gunner Rainey passed Ryan Dorow on the All-Time hits list with his 268th hit during his third at bat of the game.
