Around the MIAA
#11 Adrian (28-6, 20-3)
The Bulldogs are the biggest movers in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA poll this week, jumping six spots to No. 11…the new ABCA coaches’ Top-30 national rankings—currently No. 16—come out later today…sophomore Mo Hanley has been selected the MIAA Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his career…he had a career-best 11 strikeouts in an 8-2 win at Trine Sunday…on the season, Hanley improves to 4-0 and lowers his earned-run average to 1.52 over 41-1/3 innings….he is ranked second in the MIAA in both ERA and strikeouts (53), the latter being a career high…sophomore Brandon Cooper earned a career high with his four hits at Trine, as he ranks fifth in the MIAA with a .393 in his first season in the AC starting lineup…according to the Adrian record book, the Bulldogs pitching staff set a single-game record with 16 strikeouts against Trine on Sunday; The previous mark was 15 against Transylvania on March 4, 2017…The Bulldogs have won 20 conference games in each of the past 14 years as AC is 20-3 in 2019…Juniors Brady Wood and Gunner Rainey, as well as Thomas Miller, all have a career-best 41 runs batted in to rank in a second-place tie in the conference…on April 26, junior pitcher Pierce Banks passes Eric Schmidt (171 from 2012-15) for sixth place with 178 strikeouts and ties Keith Bozyk (21-22 1991-95) for seventh with 21 wins (21-5) on the school's all-time charts.
Albion (19-16, 14-10)
At 14-10 with four MIAA games vs. Trine left, Albion is enjoying its most successful season vs. MIAA rivals since it finished 16-12 in 2012…3B Drew Olszewski (Kentwood/East Kentwood) hit .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles and a triple in the four games vs. Hope. He drew five walks and was hit by a pitch to raise his on base percentage to .737. Olszewski, who owns a five-game hitting streak, has three multi-hit games since April 22…LF Sean Haddlesey (Ann Arbor/Skyline) also collected eight hits in four games against Hope, finishing the series with a .444 batting average (8-for-18)…2B Kellan Huang (Canton/Saline) drove in five runs against Hope, giving him 38 RBI for the season. That places him fifth on Albion’s single-season list…Huang also has 12 doubles this season, placing him sixth on Albion’s single season list…Mitch Shedlowsky (Waterford/Mott) picked up his sixth win on the mound in Albion’s 7-5 game one victory over Hope last Thursday. That’s places him in a tie for sixth on Albion’s single-season list for victories.
Alma (13-19, 9-11)
Alma started its week against Hope on Monday, a team that had the best winning percentage in all of Division III baseball and a 16-game winning streak heading into the games. The Scots swept the doubleheader by scores of 9-7 and 11-9. Sophomore Carson Kempa (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) and junior Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich. / Unionville-Sebewaing Area) picked up the wins on the mound of the Scots while at the plate sophomore Alex Dwan (Saginaw, Mich. / Nouvel Catholic Central) hit his first career home run with a three-run blast. Alma then took on Kalamazoo for doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. The Scots earned a win on each day with Saenz picking up his fourth straight victory on Saturday and junior shortstop Zach Schirmer (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western) hitting a three-RBI double to help the Scots take one at home on Sunday.
Calvin (15-20, 10-14)
The Calvin baseball team went 4-3 last week including 3-3 in league action. The Knights opened the week by dropping both ends of Monday doubleheader with Kalamazoo. Calvin then topped Division II Davenport 10-8 on the road Thursday. On Friday, Calvin defeated Olivet in a pair of games by scores of 2-1 and 7-3. The Knights then split with the Comets on the road Saturday, winning the opener 8-1 and losing the nightcap 3-2 in 11 innings. In the 2-1 win over Olivet Friday, junior Trevor VanDuyn improved to 5-1 on the year with a complete-game victory. Mark Primus got the win in game two Friday against Olivet In the 8-1 win Saturday, senior Clay Francisco struck out a career-high 10 batters.
RV Hope (28-6, 18-6)
The Hope College baseball team played four doubleheaders in five days last week and won three out of eight games. The Flying Dutchmen (28-6 overall) won at Trine University, 12-9, in Game 2, at Albion College, 8-6, in Game 2, and at home vs. Albion, 7-3, in Game 1. Right fielder Mason Opple hit a go-ahead grand slam in the Game 1 victory vs. Albion.
Kalamazoo (12-21, 10-14)
Kalamazoo finished a week of six MIAA games by going 4-2 after beating Calvin twice and splitting its four game series with Alma. Freshman Jack Brockhaus highlighted the week on the mound for Kalamazoo. Brockhaus began the week earning the save in Kalamazoo's 8-6 win over Calvin on Monday and went on to pitch a complete game against Alma while striking out a career-high 10. His 2.59 ERA on the season is good for third in the MIAA. Senior Alex Fultz led Kalamazoo at the plate this week with 10 hits and five RBIs. Freshman Doug Propson ended the week with six hits on Sunday including a 4-for-5 performance in game two.
Olivet (3-17, 5-27)
The Olivet College baseball team won one of four games in a MIAA series against Calvin. The Comets defeated the Knights, 3-2, in 11 innings, for their lone win in the series. Junior pitcher Zac Walter went 10.1 innings and struck out nine but received a no decision. Junior Matt Rehfeldt got the final two outs to earn the win. At the plate, sophomore Seamus Mitchell hit a walk-off single to score senior Jake Robinson with the winning run.
