Around the MIAA

#17 Adrian (16-4, 9-1)

Adrian moves up two spots to No. 17 in the D3baseball.com Top-25 and is currently No. 12 in the ABCA coaches’ national poll pending the new rankings later Tuesday...sophomores Mo Hanley (pitcher) and Thomas Miller (position player) are reigning MIAA players of the week, the second time this season that the Bulldogs have swept the conference’s weekly honors…The Adrian pitching staff went 26 innings without allowing a run until Olivet broke through for its lone run in the sixth of Game 1 on Sunday, tying the longest such scoreless streak for the Bulldogs who also had 26 innings in a row over five games from April 6-9, 2011…Miller established Adrian single-game records with 13 total bases, NCAA season-high six hits (6 at-bats) and tied with the two home runs accomplished eight other times...Miller's six hits were two off the NCAA Division III record and one RBI shy of the Bulldogs benchmark (8)...In Game 2, Adrian set season highs for runs, hits, total bases (38), extra-base hits (9), home runs (3) and RBI (20)…During the weekend series with Olivet, the Bulldogs scored 52 runs and rapped 11 doubles among 52 hits…Adrian's 23 hits in Sunday's second contest are the second-most in school history and No. 1 in a true road game….The record of 24 was set by the 2017 squad against North Central-Illinois…Junior Tristin Richardson has 99 career hits…Hanley jumps back to the MIAA earned-run average lead at 0.42, getting the minimum number of innings pitched after the Game 1 start.


Albion (14-8, 9-3)

Albion went 6-2 in series against Alma and Calvin last week…OF Matt Bur (Clarkston, Mich.) hit .407 (11-for-27) with four doubles, a home run, eight runs batted in and 10 runs scored…2B Kellan Huang (Canton, Mich.) hit .400 (12-for-30) with two doubles and nine RBI…RHP Mitch Shedlowsky (Waterford, Mich.) won two starts, finishing the week with a 2.77 earned run average (four runs on 15 hits and two walks over 13 innings)…RHP Bret Chesla (Grandville, Mich.) gained a save in the first game of the Alma series and picked up a victory over Calvin…Albion scored 22 in its game two victory over Calvin, its most since a 20-14 victory over Calvin (4/16/16).


Alma (9-15, 5-7)

The Scots played in two four-game series this week. It started with Albion College on Monday as Alma fell in both games on the road. The Scots would come back on Tuesday to win their first home games of the season. Aaron Saenz (Sebewaing, Mich.) pitched six shutout innings in the junior's first career start to earn the win in the first game on Tuesday while senior Joseph Barrons (Kingston, Mich.) struck out a career-high nine in the second win against the Britons. Alma would then split a doubleheader at Trine on Saturday before sweeping the Thunder at home on Sunday. Junior Logan Huff (Johannesburg, Mich.) hit the third baseman's first career grand slam in the first win on Sunday while junior catcher Jaret Koin (Sterling, Mich.) combined to hit 6-for-9 on the day.


Calvin (9-12, 5-7)

Calvin went 2-4 on the week, taking two games from Trine on Monday before dropping all four games of a weekend series with Albion. Junior Trevor VanDuyn had a strong week on the mound for the Knights, tossing six innings in gaining the victory in a 10-5 win over Trine and then going eight strong innings while receiving a no-decision in a 7-3 loss to Albion in 10 innings. In a doubleheader sweep over Trine on Monday, senior Clay Francisco notched a shutout victory in a 4-0 win over the Thunder. Sophomore Ricky Padilla was the top hitter for Calvin on the week, going 9-for-22 at the plate for a .409 batting average.


RV Hope (19-1, 11-1)

Hope won all six MIAA games last week, defeating Olivet twice on the road and taking all four games in a weekend series against Kalamazoo. The Flying Dutchmen continued their best start by improving to 19-1 overall and 11-1 in MIAA play. On Saturday at Kalamazoo, junior right fielder Mason Opple (Hudsonville, Mich.) became the ninth Flying Dutchman with 100 career runs batted in, and reliever CJ Otteman (Zeeland, Mich.) recorded two saves.


Kalamazoo (4-13, 2-6)

The Hornets collected two wins in a busy week that featured eight MIAA games. In its first game of the week, Kalamazoo defeated Adrian 7-0 in a game that featured a one-hit shutout by Jack Brockhaus. The freshman stuck out nine batters in the seven inning game. Chase Coselman is leading the Hornets this season at the plate with a .356 batting average and 11 RBI. Coselman has seven extra-base hits this season including two home runs and a triple. Freshman Noah Hecht is second on the team in hits with 18 and sports a .316 average. Hecht is tied with Coselman with 11 RBI. The Hornets will begin the week by hosting Trine before a four-game series with Albion over the weekend.


Olivet (3-20, 2-8)

The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Adrian in a four-game MIAA series. Riley Bennett started every game at shortstop and posted a .385 batting average, and did not commit an error in 22 chances. Bennett walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice for a .500 on-base percentage.


Trine (9-13, 2-8)

Trine finished the week with a 2-6 record...Jacob Heller led the team in batting average at .387 (12-of-31) and had a RBI and five runs scored...pitcher Adam Wheaton went 1-0 with a complete game appearance to pitch seven innings and struck out seven batters.
