Around the MIAA
#10 Adrian (32-7, 24-4)
Adrian captured its 11th-straight MIAA baseball championship, extending a conference record, with a 5-2 win over visiting Hope as part of a twinbill sweep of the Flying Dutchmen…the Bulldogs will host the conference tournament for the seventh time in the event’s eight-year history…Adrian is nationally-ranked No. 10 by D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and No. 14 by American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper…senior third baseman Dugan Darnell, the reigning mIAA Player of the Week, also makes his debut on the current D3baseball.com National Team of the Week…the Bulldogs, who enter the postseason 32-7, have tied a school record for regular-season victories…Adrian sweeps the major individual awards (Junior Gunner Rainey, Position Player and Max Denny, Pitcher) for the fourth time in a row and ninth overall since 2006…Rainey leads the MIAA with a career-best .442 batting average and is second with 46 runs batted in…Denny is 9-0 with a conference-best 1.44 earned-run average, becoming the second AC freshman in history to win his first nine decisions…Thomas Miller, a first-team All-MIAA shortstop in his first season at Adrian, tops the conference with 47 RBI and is batting .406 for second place....17-2 home record in 2019.
Albion (22-18, 17-11)
Albion swept the Sunday doubleheader at Trine for its 21st and 22nd victories of the season, the most for the team since 2007…Albion’s third place finish in the MIAA is also the best since 2007…CF Riley Stesiak hit .500 (7-for-14) with five runs scored in the four-game series against Trine. All seven hits went for extra bases (five doubles, a triple and homerun) for a 1.214 slugging percentage. He also drew three walks for a .588 on base percentage…C Justin Charron hit .429 (6-for-14) with four doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored in the series…2B Kellan Huang produced two RBI in the series, giving him 40 for the season (tying him for third-most in a season at Albion)…RHP Mitch Shedlowsky improved to 6-1 against MIAA rivals on the mound when he notched the game one victory last Friday.
Alma (18-22, 14-14)
The baseball team earned the four seed in the MIAA postseason with a win in game two of a doubleheader against Calvin College on Saturday (May 4). The Scots finished the regular season with the best winning percentage at home of the last decade. Juniors Pete Carravallah (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) and Max Trucks (Mt. Pleasant, Mich. / Mt. Pleasant) each had four hits on the day with Trucks going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI in game two. Sophomore Carson Kempa (North Branch, Mich. / North Branch) earned his third win of the season on the mound for Alma. Alma will face the top-seeded Adrian Bulldogs in the first round of the playoffs.
Calvin (17-22, 12-16)
Calvin closed out its season last weekend by splitting a four-game conference series with Alma. The Knights dropped a 3-2 decision in the series opener on Friday and then came back to win game two 2-1 on a base-hit by Nick Vogel in the bottom of the 11th inning. On Saturday, Calvin took the opener 4-1 behind a strong starting pitching performance from Clay Fancisco and stellar defense from senior centerfielder Beau Redfield. The Knights fell in the series finale 11-8. Freshman Ryan Petersen led Calvin at the plate in the series, going 9-17 with four doubles.
RV Hope (29-9, 19-9)
The Hope College baseball team will be the No. 2 seed in the MIAA Baseball Tournament.
Kalamazoo (15-22, 13-15)
The Hornets wrapped up their season by winning three of four games against Olivet over the weekend. Kalamazoo finished the season with four batters hitting over the .300 mark. Chase Coselman led the team with a .362 average and had a team-high two home runs. Seniors Alex Fultz and Jordan Wiley were both over .300 and hit at the top of the line up all season. Wiley led Kalamazoo in stolen bases for the fourth straight season. Freshman Noah Hecht was the fourth and final player and led the team in doubles with eight. Freshman Jack Brockhaus led Kalamazoo on the mound with a 3-2 record and team best 2.59 ERA which was third lowest in the MIAA.
Olivet (7-33, 5-23)
The Olivet College baseball team ended its season with a 1-3 record against Kalamazoo College. The Comets' lone win in the series was a 6-4 eight-inning victory in game three. After blowing the save in the seventh inning, junior Matt Rehfeldt recorded the three outs in the eighth to earn the win. A wild pitch scored Matt Hewitt with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Trine (15-25, 8-20)
Finished the week 1-3 in final four-game series of the season...Jacob Heller led the team in hits with five (five-of-16 overall), including two doubles and Joe Fiorucci led the team in batting average at .444 (four-of-nine)...Kyle Robinson pitched a team-high six innings and posted a 3.00 ERA with three strikeouts...Caleb Deiter got the lone win on the mound after pitching 2.2 innings with two "K's" and a 3.38 ERA.
