Hope Baseball Fends Off Rally, Sweeps Trine

Pitcher Matt Glowacki's attention to detail helped the Hope College baseball team hold on to sweep Trine on Saturday in Angola, Indiana.

The senior from Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS) tagged out the game-tying runner after he failed to touch home plate following a RBI double. Glowacki then retired the next batter he faced in the bottom of the ninth on a flyout to preserve a 7-6 win.

The Flying Dutchmen (18-13 overall) won the opener 13-0. They leapfrogged Trine (16-15, 12-8) into second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association standings after taking three games in the series with the Thunder.

Glowacki's seventh save of the season tied the school record held by Jordan Carrigan since 2010. Glowacki's 10 career saves trail only Carrigan's 20.

Hope fended off a Trine comeback after the Flying Dutchmen jumped to a 6-0 lead with three runs apiece in the first and second innings.

Leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. He's now hitting .481 on the season with 43 RBIs that are the third-most in team history.

Konkle trails only Kyle Blackport's 49 RBI from 2002 and B.J. Maas's 44 from 2003.

Rightfielder JP Batts of Spring, Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) also collected three hits. The Flying Dutchmen outhit Trine 30-14 during the doubleheader.

Winning pitcher Michael Thomas of Troy, Michigan (Troy HS) scattered four hits and one run over four innings of relief. Thomas (2-0) struck out four and walked two.

In the opener, shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI. He had a two-run double and a RBI single.

Batts contributed a two-run triple, while third baseman Danny Carrasco of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS) had a two-run single.

Winning pitcher Austin Goodyke of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian HS) fired a four-hit shutout. Goodyke (3-3) struck out three and walked two.

Hope's next MIAA series is against Albion. The Flying Dutchmen play a doubleheader at Albion on Thursday, April 28 at 2 p.m.
