Hope Baseball Splits With Alma In MIAA, Home Openers

The Hope College baseball team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Association play by splitting a doubleheader with Alma College on Saturday.

The Flying Dutchmen (5-6 overall) won the first game of their home opener with a 9-1 victory at Boeve Stadium. Alma took the nightcap 7-4.

Senior Jake Chipka of Waterville, Ohio (Anthony Wayne HS) tossed a complete game in the first game. He struck out six while allowing two hits and one unearned run over seven innings.

Leftfielder Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS) went 2-for-2 with a two-run single in the first.

Rightfielder J.P. Batts of Spring Lake, Michigan (Spring Lake HS) collected two hits in four at-bats that included a two-run single in the third inning.

Centerfielder Nicholas Holt of Muskegon, Michigan (Catholic Central HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He had a two-run double in the fourth.

Shortstop Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS) finished with three runs scored and two hits.

In the nightcap, Hope answered a three-run Alma fourth with one of its own, but the Scots answered with a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh inning of the scheduled nine-inning game.

Konkle totaled one RBI for the Flying Dutchmen, as did catcher Nick Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), second baseman Andrew Zawacki of Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Grand Rapids HS) and VanderWeele. 

Hope concludes the four-game series with a Monday doubleheader at Alma. First pitch is 2 p.m.
