Calvin SAAC Group Raises Funds for Kids' Food Basket

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - This past weekend, Calvin University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised $663.00 for West Michigan-based non-profit Kids' Food Basket.

SAAC athletes from Calvin's varsity teams staffed home events on Friday and Saturday and fans were able to decorate lunch sacks or make a cash donation to Kids' Food Basket.

"Each year our SAAC members engage our athletic department in a service project, and this year our student-athletes were interested is supporting Kids' Food Basket's Sack Supper Program," said Calvin SAAC advisor Becky Hilgert.  "Our athletic teams partnered up to design lunch sacks and solicited donations from fans attending our home events this past weekend. In addition to the monetary donations, we were able to provide Kids' Food Basket over 350 designed lunch sacks."

The Kids' Food Basket empowers the community to attack childhood hunger so young people can learn and live well. The Sack Supper program provides a nutritious, ready-to-eat evening meal to over 8,000 children each weeknight in West Michigan.

"Our SAAC members are thrilled to be able to provide decorated sack lunch bags to help put a smile on the face of a child in need," said Calvin SAAC student-athlete president Chris Visser.  "It was great to see our student-athletes and Calvin community come together to support this great cause."

NCAA Division III SAAC represents the student-athlete to have a voice on campus.  SAAC members offer input on NCAA legislation, identify student-athlete issues and encourage student-athlete community outreach.
