MIAA Athletes of the Week - February 17, 2020

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 14 individual student-athletes and two relay teams selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on February 16, 2020. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Derrick DeVries, Calvin
Senior, Wing
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Derrick DeVries averaged 28.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in two MIAA wins last week, moving the Knights into second place in the MIAA standings. DeVries poured in 37 points in Calvin's 87-76 win over Alma Feb. 15 while adding 16 rebounds, five assists, and one blocked shot. Earlier in the week, DeVries tallied 19 points, including a perfect 11-of-11 effort at the free throw line, in the Knights' 78-71 road win over Trine Feb. 12; DeVries added 14 rebounds and four assists.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Tara Bieniewicz, Trine
Sophomore, Guard
Chesterfield, Mich.

Tara Bieniewicz averaged 19.0 points last week in two Trine victories, including the Thunder's 86-39 win over Adrian Feb. 15. In that game, Bieniewicz was 7-of-8 from the field, with the lone miss coming from three-point range, on the way to a career-tying high 21 points in just 17 minutes of play. Against Albion Feb. 12, Bieniewicz registered 17 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in Trine's 66-50 victory. For the week, Bieniewicz played 51 minutes without committing a single turnover.

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Fernando Robison, Albion
Sophomore, Midfield
Tecumseh, Mich.

Fernando Robison won 25 of 30 face-offs in Albion's 17-11 win over Augustana (Ill.) Feb. 15. Robison also gathered 24 of Albion's 48 ground balls in the contest and attempted two shots.
 

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Sam Puzevic, Albion
Freshman, Attack
Mattawan, Mich.

Sam Puzevic had a six-goal effort in Albion's 17-11 win over Augustana (Ill.) Feb. 15. On eight shots, Puzevic tallied six goals including the final four Albion goals. Puzevic, who also scored the first goal of the game, added two ground balls.

MIAA Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Allie Ray, Alma
Senior, Goalie
Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.

Allie Ray made 16 saves with a .516 save percentage in Alma's season-opener against Cleary Feb. 13. Ray faced 40 shots, including 31 shots on goal; Ray added four ground balls in the contest.
  

MIAA Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week

Carly Schwarz, Albion
Junior, Midfield
Clinton Twp., Mich.

Carly Schwarz led Albion with five goals in Albion's season-opener against Lawrence Tech Feb. 15, 22-10. Four of Schwarz's goals came in the second half. Schwarz added two ground balls and four draw controls in the game.

MIAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

Hailey Hisaw, Saint Mary's
Sophomore, Pitcher
Elkhart, Ind.

Hailey Hisaw threw six innings in Saint Mary's 2-1 setback to Cleary Feb. 14 to start the 2020 campaign. Hisaw scattered eight hits and walked only one in the complete game effort.
 

MIAA Softball Position Player of the Week

Kelsey Keilman, Saint Mary's
Senior, Outfield
South Bend, Ind.

Kelsey Keilman went 2-for-6 with a double and one run in Saint Mary's opening week against Concordia-Ann Arbor and Cleary Feb. 14. Keilman had a hit in each game and scored Saint Mary's lone run of the weekend in a 2-1 setback to Cleary.

MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Lilly Chamberlin, Saint Mary's
Junior, No. 5 & 6 Singles / No. 2 Doubles
Harbor Springs, Mich.

Lilly Chamberlin was a two-time winner in both Saint Mary's contests last week, including a 6-3 win over Spring Arbor Feb. 15. Against Spring Arbor, Chamberlin paired with sister Lucy Chamberlin at No. 2 doubles for an 8-7 (7-2) win before a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 5 singles. In Saint Mary's 4-3 loss to NAIA foe Aquinas, Chamberlin again partnered with Lucy Chamberlin for a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. In singles, Chamberlin won 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 6 singles.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Bryce Reynolds, Calvin
Junior
Byron Center, Mich.

Bryce Reynolds won the weight throw at the Aquinas Meet Feb. 14, marking at 17.94m to win by over 1.3 meters on a field of 25 competitors, including NAIA competitors. Reynolds' distance ranks first in the MIAA and 10th in NCAA Division III.
 

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Tyler Johnson, Calvin
Senior
Springfield, Ill.

Tyler Johnson was the top NCAA Division III finisher in the 5,000m run (14:37.93) at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet Feb. 14, competing against NCAA Division I and Division II competitors. Finishing 18th overall, Johnson's time was a season-best and ranks 21st in NCAA Division III (14:47.33 modified time).

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Charley Hengesbach, Alma
Junior
Saginaw, Mich.

Charley Hengesbach won the shot put (12.23m) at the Aquinas Meet Feb. 14, winning by 0.11m against a field of 20 athletes. Hengesbach then finished fourth in the weight throw with a personal-best effort of 13.47m to beat nine MIAA competitors in the event.
 

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Evie Bultemeyer, Trine
Junior
Fort Wayne, Ind.

Evie Bultemeyer set two Trine University records at the Grand Valley State Big Meet Feb. 14. In the 1-mile run, Bultemeyer finished second overall and was the top NCAA Division III runner with a time of 4:53.27 to rank second nationally. Bultemeyer also competed in the 800m run, finishing seventh overall with a time of 2:11.96 to rank third in NCAA Division III.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Donald Moses III, Adrian
Junior, 197
Grand Blanc, Mich.

Donald Moses III won the 197-pound weight class at the Mid-States Invitational Feb. 15, going 5-0 with one major decision. The title marked Moses' first-ever wrestling tournament championship.
