MIAA Athletes of the Week - February 10, 2020

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 14 individual student-athletes and two relay teams selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on February 9, 2020. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Dylan Dzendzel, Alma
Senior, Pitcher
Kalamazoo, Mich.

Dylan Dzendzel threw five innings for Alma against Louisiana College Feb. 8. In earning the win, where Alma outlasted Louisiana College 13-5, Dzendzel scattered four hits while striking out seven in the game.

 

MIAA Baseball Position Player of the Week

Jaret Koin, Alma
Senior, Catcher
Sterling, Mich.

Jaret Koin hit in the leadoff spot for Alma in the Scots' season opening three-game series with Louisiana College Feb. 8-9. Koin batted .417 with a .563 slugging percentage for the week, and had a pair of runners caught stealing in game one on defense. Also in that game, Koin went 2-of-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and three runs scored in Alma's 13-5 victory.


MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Derrick DeVries, Calvin
Senior, Wing
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Derrick DeVries scored 35 points to go with 12 rebounds and seven assists in Calvin's 84-59 win at Hope Feb. 8, registering the third-highest individual scoring performance in the history of the Calvin-Hope rivalry. Earlier in the week, DeVries scored 24 points to go with 12 rebounds in Calvin's 79-53 victory on the road against Olivet Feb. 5.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Gabby Timmer, Calvin
Sophomore, Forward
Caledonia, Mich.

Gabby Timmer averaged 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for Calvin. In Calvin's 57-51 road win over Saint Mary's Feb. 5, Timmer scored 25 points to go with nine rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes of play; Timmer shot 12-of-17 from the field in the contest. Timmer then capped the week aiding the Knights in a 92-55 win over Olivet Feb. 8. In 17 minutes of play, Timmer tallied 15 points and six rebounds.

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Fernando Robison, Albion
Sophomore, Midfield
Tecumseh, Mich.

Fernando Robison won 23 of 34 ground balls in Albion's 18-16 win over Wooster Feb. 8. Robison also gathered 14 ground balls and tallied a goal in the season opener for the Britons.

 

MIAA Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Jace Conley, Albion
Sophomore, Attack
Waterford, Mich.

Jace Conley scored on all six shot attempts in Albion's 18-16 season-opening win over Wooster Feb. 8. Conley scored six goals to pace the Britons, and added two assists in the win.


MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Sam Ankley, Kalamazoo
Freshman
Kalamazoo, Mich.

Sam Ankely was a two-time winner in Kalamazoo's meet with Alma Feb. 8. Ankley scored 257.95 on the 1-meter board and 222.55 on the 3-meter board.
  

MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Jackson Rysavy, Kalamazoo
Freshman
Minneapolis, Minn.

Jackson Rysavy was a two-time winner for Kalamazoo in the Hornets' win against Alma Feb. 8. Rysavy won the 400 IM with a time of 4:27.94. Rysavy then led off Kalamazoo's 200 free relay team that touched first.

MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Eve Petrie, Kalamazoo
Sophomore
East Lansing, Mich.

Eve Petrie was a two-time winner on the boards to aid Kalamazoo in their victory over Alma Feb. 8. Petrie won the 1-meter board with a score of 231.55 and won the 3-meter board with a score of 247.60.
 

MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Kate Haywood, Kalamazoo
Freshman
Hastings, Mich.

Kate Haywood was was a two-time individual winner in Kalamazoo's win over Alma Feb. 8. Haywood won the 200 free (2:06.47) and the 100 back (1:05.23) to aid the Hornets in their final dual meet of the season.

MIAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Daniel Henry, Kalamazoo
Senior, No. 2 Singles / No. 1 Doubles
Kalamazoo, Mich.

Daniel Henry went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles in Kalamazoo's wins over Wabash and Earlham Feb. 7 and 8, respectively. Against Wabash, Henry paired with Ian Yi for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Henry followed up against Earlham with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and a 6-4, 4-6, 13-11 win at No. 2 singles.

MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Claire Hallock, Hope
Senior, No. 2 Singles / No. 1 Doubles
Lakeland, Fla.

Claire Hallock prevailed in a three-set contest at No. 2 singles in Hope's 8-1 setback to No. 7 Carnegie Mellon Feb. 8. In registering Hope's lone point, Hallock defeated Vinaya Rao 6-0, 4-6, 10-8. At No. 1 doubles, Hallock and Amanda Bandrowski battled before falling 8-7 (4).


MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Jayvin Wolfe, Calvin
Senior
Middleton, Mich.

Jayvin Wolfe had two top 10 perfornaces at North Central College last week, placing seventh in the shot put (13.55m) and ninth in the weight throw (13.59m).
 

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athletes of the Week

Distance Medley Relay, Trine
Derek Miller, Jr., Shipshewana, Ind.; Jake Gladieux, Fr., Oregon, Ohio; Levi Neuzerling, Jr., Noblesville, Ind.; Neil O'Brien, Jr., Whiteland, Ind.

Miller, Gladieux, Neuzerling, and O'Brien set a Trine record in the Distance Medley Relay while competing at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic Feb. 8. Finishing the race in 10:28.83, the quartet ranks ninth in NCAA Division III and first in the MIAA.

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Tanya Visser, Calvin
Sophomore
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Tanya Visser thre a lifetime best distance of 12.19m in the shot put to finish second in the event at North Central College. Visser moves up to third in the MIAA with the effort.
 

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Distance Medley Relay, Trine
Elizabeth Lohman, Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind.; Stephanie Hartpence, So., Elkhart, Ind.; Chloe Brittain, So., Breckenridge, Mich.; Evie Bultemeyer, Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Trine Distance Medley Relay team turned in a time of 12:18.83 at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic Feb. 8. In winning the event by over a 14-second margin, the Trine quartet now ranks seventh in NCAA Division III.
