MIAA Athletes of the Week - February 3, 2020

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 12 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on February 2, 2020. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Ryan Stevens, Alma
Senior, Guard
Lowell, Mich.

Ryan Stevens averaged 10.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 9.0 assists per game in a 2-0 week for Alma. Stevens made a run at a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists in Alma's 83-72 win at Adrian Feb. 1. Stevens was in the giving mood against Kalamazoo Jan. 29, handing out 10 assists; with that effort, Stevens became the first player in Alma history to eclipse both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists. Along with six points, six rebounds, and two steals, Stevens aided Alma in an 86-78 road win against the Hornets.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Lauren Newman, Hope
Junior, Guard
Flushing, Mich.

Lauren Newman tallied 25 points in a key 60-38 win at Albion Jan. 29, shooting 9-of-13 from the field, including 6-of-9 from three-point range to lead nationally-ranked Hope in the road victory. Newman added two rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Later in the week, Newman played just 14 minutes in Hope's 104-39 win over Kalamazoo Feb. 1, finishing with five points, three assists to no turnovers, two steals, one block and two rebounds.

MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Justin Huttenlocher, Albion
Freshman
Shelby Twp., Mich.

Justin Huttenlocher was a two-time winner in Albion's win over Olivet Jan. 31, and then was a two-time winner at Calvin and against Alma Feb. 1. For the week, Huttenlocher averaged 261.70 on the 1-meter board and 261.25 on the 3-meter board.
 

MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Jake Huttenlocher, Albion
Junior
Shelby Twp., Mich.

Jake Huttenlocher set an Olivet pool record in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 57.87 to win the event in Albion's victory at Olivet Jan. 31; Huttenlocher also aided Albion in the 400 medley relay win and was outtouched by teammate Evan Wonner in the 100 free (48.40). Huttenlocher won the 200 breaststroke in Albion's tri-meet at Calvin with Alma Feb. 1, winning by almost five seconds.

MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Hannabeth Magnussen, Calvin
Junior
Oakdale, Calif.

Hannabeth Magnussen was a two-time winner with a pair of Regional Qualifying Scores in Calvin's tri-meet with Albion and Alma Feb. 1. Magnussen scored 267.70 on the 3-meter board and 266.60 on the 1-meter board.

MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Camille Misra, Kalamazoo
Freshman
Birmingham, Mich.

Camille Misra was a two-time individual winner in Kalamazoo's meet with Hope Feb. 1, touching first in the 100 back (1:00.44) and 100 free (55.86). Misra also was the leadoff in Kalamazoo's winning 400 free relay team which held off Hope by .07 seconds. Misra also swam a 27.7 leg in the 200 medley relay.

MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Amanda Bandrowski, Hope
Senior, No. 1 Singles / No. 1 Doubles
Traverse City, Mich.

Amanda Bandrowski helped Hope start the spring season with a 6-1 win over NCAA Division II foe Davenport Jan. 31. In doubles, Bandrowski paired with Claire Hallock for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Bandrowski then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

John Hamilton, Adrian
Senior
Northville, Mich.

John Hamilton hit a mark of 13.86m (45' 5.75") while competing at the IWU Midwest Indoor Classic Feb. 1, finishing second behind an NAIA competitor. That distance is first in the MIAA, 35th in NCAA Division III, and broke Hamilton's previous school record by one foot.
 

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athletes of the Week

4x400m Relay, Olivet
Tyler Chavalia, Jr., Kalkaska, Mich.; Noah Bailey, Sr., Lenox, Mich.; Jordon Brown, Fr., Niles, Mich.; Kyle McDowell, So., Kalkaska, Mich.

Chavalia, Bailey, Brown, and McDowell ran a school-record time in the 4x400m Relay at the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open Feb. 1, improving the Olivet record by over five seconds. The 4x400m Relay team finished in 3:20.72 to win the event, which included NCAA Division I and II relay teams. That time ranks first in the MIAA and 18th in NCAA Division III.

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Valerie Obear, Trine
Sophomore
Fishers, Ind.

Valerie Obear improved on a lifetime best set last week in the weight throw with a mark of 16.65m at the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Alumni Open Feb. 1. Obear finished fourth behind NCAA Division II competitors and one NAIA competitor, and remains first in the MIAA and moves Obear up to 18th in NCAA Division III.
 

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Chloe Brittain, Trine
Sophomore
Breckenridge, Mich.

Chloe Brittain ran the 800m run in a lifetime-best time of 2:19.03 at the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Alumni Open Feb. 1. Finishing eighth among 29 competitors from NCAA Division I, II, and NAIA, Brittain ranks first in the MIAA and 46th in NCAA Division III.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Trent Lashuay, Alma
Sophomore, 133
St. Johns, Mich.

Trent Lashuay entered the Pete Willson Wheaton Invitational unseeded and finished with a 5-2 record including four pins to finish fourth at the 133 weight class. Lashuay started with a 39-second pin of John Caroll's Max Turner, then followed with a 4:55 pin before a decision sent Lashuay to the consolation round. Lashuay then added two more pins, including a 32-second pin against No. 12 Levi Englman of Ferrum.
