MIAA Athletes of the Week - January 20, 2020

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 12 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on January 19, 2020. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Langston Johnson, Trine
Senior, Guard
Elkhart, Ind.

Langston Johnson averaged 25.5 points per game in Trine's 2-0 week on the road against MIAA foes to stay unbeaten in conference play. Johnson shot 11-of-17 from the field on the way to a 28-point performance in Trine's 75-61 win at Adrian Jan. 15; Johnson added five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Later in the week against Calvin Jan. 18, Johnson tallied 23 points along with four assists in Trine's 81-78 victory.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Olivia Voskuil, Hope
Junior, Center
Holland, Mich.

Olivia Voskuil averaged 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks in a 2-0 week for Hope. Voskuil shot 66.7 percent from the field on the week, including a 6-of-8 effort at Saint Mary's Jan. 18 on the way to 13 points. Against Calvin Jan. 15, Voskuil tallied 11 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists to aid in Hope's 74-50 victory.

MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Justin Huttenlocher, Albion
Freshman
Shelby Twp., Mich.

Justin Huttenlocher had two top-three finishes at the Michigan-Indiana Collegiate Quad Meet, hosted by Hope at Hudsonville High School Jan. 17-18. Huttenlocher placed second on the 1-meter board, scoring 416.75 as the top MIAA competitor; it was Huttenlocher's personal best and only nine points shy of a Regional Qualifying Score. On the 3-meter board, Huttenlocher placed third with a score of 394.20.
 

MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Daniel Keith, Hope
Junior
Saline, Mich.

Daniel Keith was a two-time winner at the Michigan-Indiana Collegiate Quad Meet, hosted by Hope at Hudsonville High School Jan. 17-18. Keith started the event with a first-place finish in the 200 IM, setting an event record and winning with a time of 1:54.71, over four seconds faster than the event runner-up. On Saturday, Keith won the 200 back with a time of 1:53.89, again winning by a four-second margin. Keith then placed second in the 100 fly (52.99).

MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Hannabeth Magnussen, Calvin
Junior
Oakdale, Calif.

Hannabeth Magnussen was a two-time winner on the boards at Grove City Jan. 17, and then added a first-place finish and second-place effort in Calvin's tri-meet with defending NCAA Champion Denison at Carnegie Mellon Jan. 18. Against 10 divers on the 3-meter board at the tri-meet, Magnussen scored 263.35 to win the event. Magnussen scored 258.90 to finish second on the 1-meter board. 
 

MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Hannah Chao, Calvin
Junior
Farmington Hills, Mich.

Hannah Chao won the 200 free in Calvin's dual at Grove City Jan. 17, touching first in 1:59.86; Chao also had the top tine in the 100 IM (1:01.70). In Calvin's tri-meet with defending NCAA Champion Denison at Carnegie Mellon Jan. 18, Chao finished fourth in the 100 back (58.48) and fifth in the 200 back (2:10.73) while anchoring Calvin's second-place finishing 200 free relay.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athletes of the Week

Dazmond Lawrence and Nicholas Jackson, Adrian
Junior / Junior
Detroit, Mich. / Champaign, Ill.

Dazmond Lawrence and Nicholas Jackson both cleared 2.0m in the high jump at the Tiffin Dragon Open Jan. 18 for season-best efforts. The pair tied for second in the event, with the 2.0m mark tying for 14th nationally in the high jump and ranks first in the MIAA this season.
 

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Nick Hoffman, Hope
Sophomore
Holland, Mich.

Nick Hoffman turned in two MIAA-best times while competing at the Bill Clinger Classic at Grand Valley State Jan. 17. Hoffman ran the 1-mile run in 4:20.32 (4:23.66 adjusted time) to finish 12th overall and second among NCAA Division III competitors; Hoffman's time also ranks first in the MIAA and 20th in NCAA Division III. In the 800m run, Hoffman finished 14th in 1:59.11 (2:00.82 adjusted time) to rank first in MIAA.

Addy Gerig, Hope
Senior
Holland, Mich.

Addy Gerig competed in three field events at the Bill Clinger Classic at Grand Valley State Jan. 17. Taking on NCAA Division I and Division II competitors, Gerig placed eighth in the high jump (1.55m), a mark that is first in the MIAA this winter. In the triple jump, Gerig hit 9.95m to finish 13th overall and rank second in the MIAA. Gerig also reached 4.40m in the long jump, which is seventh in MIAA.
 

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Sadie Heeringa, Calvin
Sophomore
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Sadie Heeringa competed in the 1-mile run at the Bill Clinger Classic at Grand Valley State Jan. 17, placing 13th overall with a time of 5:09.87 (5:12.94 adjusted time) which ranks 24th in the NCAA and first in the MIAA.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Owen Guilford, Olivet
Freshman, 165
Portland, Mich.

Owen Guilford went 5-0 last week, starting with a 9-5 decision in Olivet's win over Trine Jan. 16 to clinch a share of the MIAA title for the Comets. On the weekend at the Alma Open Jan. 18, Guilford won the 165-pound championship. During Guilford's title run, the freshman tallied one major decision against Ohio Northern's Adam Dillon. Guilford defeated Central Michigan's Dustin Gross, 9-4, and won the title with a 10-6 decision over Jerrod Mulins of Rochester University.
