MIAA Athletes of the Week - January 13, 2020

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 11 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on January 12, 2020. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Marcus Winters, Trine
Senior, Guard
Toledo, Ohio

Marcus Winters averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game during a 2-0 week for Trine to put the Thunder tied for first in the MIAA standings. In Trine's 79-71 win against Alma Jan. 12, Winters tallied 15 points, nine rebounds, and a team-high seven assists. Earlier in the week against Kalamazoo Jan. 8, Winters poured in a game-high 23 points while adding four rebounds, four assists, and three steals while leading Trine's defensive efforts in their 86-69 win.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Emily Bernas, Albion
Senior, Guard/Forward
Waterford, Mich.

Emily Bernas averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 2.5 assists per game in a 2-0 week for Albion against MIAA challengers. Bernas' 17-point performance in the Britons' 98-70 win against Olivet Jan. 11 lifted the senior guard/forward over the 1,000-point plateau; Bernas added 10 rebounds for the second double-double of the senior's career. Bernas also had 16 points and three steals in Albion's 65-47 win at Adrian Jan. 8.

MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Kam Wilcox, Hope
Sophomore
Forest Hills, Mich.

Kam Wilcox won the 1-meter diving event at the Michigan/Illinois Quad Meet Jan. 11, registering a career-best score of 426.70 for an NCAA Regional Qualifying Score. Wilcox also placed second on the 3-meter board.
 

MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Seth Costello, Hope
Senior
Williamston, Mich.

Seth Costello won the 200 back, recovering from an early deficit to win the event in 2:04.27 at the Michigan/Illinois Quad Meet Jan. 11. Costello and second-place Tyler Sakalys-Moore swapped leads throughout the race before Costello touched first by seven tenths of a second. Costello also swam the lead leg in Hope's B 400 medley relay team, swimming the 100m leg in 57.74.

MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Olivia Robertson, Hope
Freshman
Sturgis, Mich.

Olivia Robertson placed first on the 3-meter board at the Michigan/Illinois Quad Meet Jan. 11 with a score of 299.75. On the 1-meter board, Robertson finished second with a score of 305.20.
 

MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Mary Trimble, Kalamazoo
Sophomore
Dearborn, Mich.

Mary Trimble was victorious in three events at the Michigan/Illinois Quad Meet Jan. 11, the only competitor at the four-team event to do so. Trimble won the 1,000 free with a time of 11:07.18, winning by a 25-second margin. Trimble added a second distance free win, touching first in the 500 free in 5:20.84. Trimble anchored the Kalamazoo 400 free relay with a split of 56.23.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Kejuan Frazier, Albion
Junior
Augusta, Ga.

Kejuan Frazier finished second in the shot put at the GVSU Invitational Jan. 10 with an effort of 16.12m to set an Albion College record and take first place among MIAA competitors; Frazier's mark is also second in the region and fifth in NCAA Division III. Frazier also finished 14th overall in the weight throw with a personal-best distance of 13.40m.
 

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Derek Miller, Trine
Junior
Shipshewana, Ind.

Derek Miller won the 3,000m run at the Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open Jan. 11 with a time of 8:48.80 to win the race by six seconds. Miller's time ranks first in the MIAA and 18th in NCAA Division III and narrowly missed the Trine record for the event.

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Charley Hengesbach, Alma
Junior
Saginaw, Mich.

Charley Hengesbach had a personal best of 12.03m in the shot put at the SVSU Classic Jan. 10, placing fifth overall and first among NCAA Division III competitors. Hengesbach's mark ranks 38th in NCAA Division III, first in the MIAA, and second all-time in Alma program history. Competing in the weight throw, Hengesbach turned in a personal-best effort of 12.07m to place 11th overall; that mark is fifth in the MIAA.
 

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Chloe Brittain, Trine
Sophomore
Breckenridge, Mich.

Chloe Brittain took second in the 1-mile run at the Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open Jan. 11. That time ranks 43rd in NCAA Division III and first among MIAA competitors. Brittain also ran a leg of Trine's 4x400m relay, with an unofficial split of 1:04.2.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Cole Hersch, Olivet
Senior, 157
New Lothrup, Mich.

Cole Hersch went 5-0 last week, including wins over two top 10 wrestlers at the Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals. Hersch started the week with a major decision in Olivet's MIAA-opening win over Adrian Jan. 7. Hersch then went unbeaten on the weekend, notching two tech falls to go with a 3-2 win over Roger Williams' Taylor Shay (No. 8 NWCA, No. 7 D3wrestle.com at 165) and a 16-14 win over Coe's Cole Erickson (No. 6 NWCA, No. 7 D3wrestle at 157). Against Erickson, Hersch came back from a 10-2 first-period deficit for the win to improve to 22-5 on the year.
