MIAA Athletes of the Week - December 9, 2019

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 11 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on December 8, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Steven Harvey, Alma
Junior, Guard
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Steven Harvey went 7-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, while adding a 4-of-4 effort at the free throw line on the way to a 20-point effort in Alma's Dec. 6 88-81 win over No. 13 UW-Oshkosh, the 2019 NCAA Division III National Champions. Harvey added four rebounds and did not have a turnover in 36 minutes on the floor. It was Alma's first home win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the 2015-16 season when Alma defeated then No. 4 Hope. Harvey added 11 points, five rebounds, an assist and a steal against UW-Whitewater Dec. 7.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Sydney Muller, Hope
Sophomore, Forward
Caledonia, Mich.

During a 2-0 week to start MIAA play, Sydney Muller averaged 10.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals to keep the Flying Dutch unbeaten on the season. Muller tied for the team lead in scoring with 11 points while adding game-bests of eight rebounds and five steals in Hope's 64-38 win over Calvin Dec. 7. In Hope's MIAA opener against Adrian Dec. 4, Muller had 10 points with a game-high seven rebounds to aid Hope in a 76-41 victory.

MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Alex Bergsma, Calvin
Junior
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Alex Bergsma placed sixth both on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the Calvin Invite Dec. 5-7. Competing against both NCAA Division II and Division III opponents, Bergsma scored 364.35 on the 1-meter board for a season-best, and 358.45 on the 3-meter board.

 
MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Julian Iturbe, Calvin
Junior
Caracas, Venezuela

Julian Iturbe set three Calvin records in the 100 free (44.30), 200 free (1:37.92), and 400 IM (3:59.60) while competing at the Calvin Invite Dec. 5-7. On Thursday, Iturbe's leadoff leg of the 800 free relay set a new Calvin record for the 200 free and ranks fourth in the NCAA. Iturbe then broke the Calvin record in the 100 free on the lead leg of the event-winning 400 free relay; Iturbe's time is third nationally, while the team's relay time of 3:01.18 is sixth-best in the country. Iturbe swam the 400 IM with a preliminary time of 3:59.60, which ranks 21st in the country and was the first sub-4 time in the event in Calvin history.

MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Hannabeth Magnussen, Calvin
Junior
Oakdale, Calif.

Hannabeth Magnussen placed second on the 1-meter board and fifth on the 3-meter board at the Calvin Invite Dec. 5-7. Competing against both NCAA Division II and Division III opponents, Magnussen scored 429.05 on the 1-meter board, the top 11-dive score by MIAA competitors this season. Magnussen's score of 387.30 on the 3-meter board is second in the MIAA this year.
 

MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Emma Schaefer, Hope
Junior
DeWitt, Mich.

Emma Schaefer set two Hope records in the 100 breast (1:04.87) and 200 IM (2:06.58) while competing at the Wheaton Invite Dec. 6-7. In the 100 breast, Schaefer won the event competing against NCAA Division I and Division III competitors with a time of 1:04.87, which broke a 18-year Hope record and ranks 16th nationally. Schaefer placed second in the 200 IM by three-tenths of a second to a Division I competitor, with the time of 2:06.58 improving on Schaefer's already standing Hope record in the event which ranks 23rd in NCAA Division III.

MIAA Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Mitch Martin, Trine
Senior, Throws
Bowling Green, Ohio

Mitch Martin finished third in the weight throw at the University of Indianapolis Season Opener Dec. 7 with a throw of 17.00m. Martin's mark ranks tied for second nationally among NCAA Division III competitors.
 

MIAA Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Josh Davis, Trine
Sophomore, Sprints
Sterling Heights, Mich.

Josh Davis finished second overall in the 60m dash at the University of Indianapolis Season Opener Dec. 7. Davis posted a time of 7.08 in the final after a time of 7.04 in the prelims; the 7.04 time is tied for 22nd in NCAA Division III. Davis also finished sixth in the 200m dash (23.20), which is tied for 49th nationally.

MIAA Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week

Stephanie Davis, Alma
Junior, Multi
Elmira, Mich.

Competing in the first indoor pentathlon in Alma indoor track and field history, Stephanie Davis placed 10th at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open Dec. 6. As the lone NCAA Division III competitor, Davis accumulated a score of 2,442 - which ranks ninth in NCAA Division III this season.
 

MIAA Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week

Mitchel Achien'g, Hope
Senior, Sprints/Jumps/Throws
Nairobi, Kenya

Mitchel Achien'g set two Hope records while competing at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open Dec. 6. Achien'g broke a nine-year record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.22; that time ranks 10th nationally. Achien'g then re-set a previously owned record in the triple jump with a mark of 11.01m, which is tied for 16th in NCAA Division III. Achien'g also ran the 60m dash in 8.19.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Trent Lashuay, Alma
Sophomore, 133
Saint Johns, Mich.

Trent Lashuay won the 133-pound weight class at the Ohio Northern Invitational Dec. 7. Lashuay went 4-0, with two technical falls and a major decision along the way. After defeating top-seeded and No. 20-ranked Seth Transue of Ohio Northern, 12-10, Lashuay then had back-to-back technical falls before a 23-15 major decision against No 2 seed Mason Brainard of Heidelberg in the final.
