MIAA Athletes of the Week - November 18, 2019

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the eight student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on November 17, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Derrick DeVries, Calvin
Senior, Wing
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Derrick DeVries averaged 26.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in Calvin's first action of the season. In Calvin's 89-83 win at Illinois Wesleyan Nov. 15, DeVries poured in 28 points and added 10 rebounds to go with a steal and an assist in 36 minutes. Against Augustana Nov. 16, DeVries tallied 24 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Rain Hinton, Albion
Junior, Forward/Center
Fort Wayne, Ind.

Rain Hinton averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in a 2-0 performance by Albion at the Trine Classic in Angola, Ind. In Albion's win over Ohio Wesleyan Nov. 15, Hinton poured in 27 points while grabbing 14 rebounds, including eight offensive boards; Hinton added two steals and a blocked shot in the win. Hinton then tallied 13 points and five rebounds in Albion's 75-67 against Marietta Nov. 16.

MIAA Football Defense Athlete of the Week

Conner Nemmers, Hope
Senior, DB
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Conner Nemmers had nine tackles - all solo efforts - while adding a 32-yard interception in Hope's 42-7 win over Adrian Nov. 16. Nemmers' effort was a career-high in tackles to lead Hope in tackles. Nemmers' interception was near the Adrian goal line to prevent a score in the third quarter.
 

MIAA Football Offense Athlete of the Week

Kenyea Houston, Hope
Sophomore, RB
Chicago, Ill.

Kenyea Houston rushed for a career-high 194 yards on 23 carries, scoring two touchdowns in Hope's 42-7 win over Adrian Nov. 16. Houston scored the game's first touchdown in the first quarter and added Hope's fourth touchdown, a 61-yard run early in the third quarter giving the host Flying Dutchmen a 28-0 lead.
 

MIAA Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week

Chase Hinkle, Alma
Senior, WR/KR
Concord, Mich.

Chase Hinkle averaged 29.0 yards on three punt returns, including a return of 77 yards for a touchdown, in Alma's 46-0 win over Finlandia Nov. 16. Hinkle also added 14 yards receiving and 62 yards rushing in the contest. 

MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Sam Ankley, Kalamazoo
Freshman
Kalamazoo, Mich.

Sam Ankley was a two-time winner twice last week in a pair of MIAA events for Kalamazoo. Against Albion Nov. 15, Ankley won the 3-meter diving event (258.60) and 1-meter board (239.60). Then, versus Calvin Nov. 16, Ankley scored 277.50 on the 3-meter board and 256.55 on the 1-meter board in fields of six and five divers, respectively.

MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Erin Radermacher, Kalamazoo
Senior
Park Ridge, Ill.

Erin Radermacher had key swims in two MIAA events last week, including turning in times that rank in the top 30 nationally. Against Albion Nov. 15, Radermacher won the 100 free in 53.77, a time that ranks tied for 27th nationally and is the fastest in the MIAA thus far this season. Radermacher also won the 200 free (1:58.95) against Albion. Versus Calvin Nov. 16, Radermacher won the 50 free (27.73), out-touching Calvin's Emily Gunderson by 0.04 seconds.

MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Owen Miller, Olivet
Sophomore, 285
Marshall, Mich.

Owen Miller was the Trine Invitational champion in the 285-pound weight class, going 5-0 on the way to repeating as the Trine Invitational champion for the second consecutive year. Miller's most notable win came in the quarterfinals, defeating Baldwin Wallace's Andrew Levis, who is listed as a top 20 wrestler by D3wrestle.com (3-1). Miller also had a first-period pin to start the tournament and won the title by major decision, 16-8, against Mount St. Joseph's Cameron Sauerwein.
