MIAA Athletes of the Week - October 14, 2019

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 16 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on October 13, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

William Terpstra, Calvin
Sophomore
Lombard, Ill.

William Terpstra was the top Calvin and top NCAA Division III competitor at the Jayhawk Cross Country Invitational Oct. 11, hosted by Muskegon Community College. Terpstra finished 23rd overall and 17th among collegiate racers with a time of 27:14.55 over the 8K course.

MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Haley Weesies, Calvin
Sophomore
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Haley Weesies placed 21st overall and 13th among collegiate competitors at the Jayhawk Cross Country Invitational Oct. 11, hosted by Muskegon Community College. Weesies was the top NCAA Division III runner by four seconds.

MIAA Football Defense Athlete of the Week

Patrick Hite, Alma
Sophomore, DL
Michigan Center, Mich.

Patrick Hite registered six tackles (three solo, three assists) in Alma's 23-14 win over Trine Oct. 12. Hite had two tackles for loss, including a solo sack to set the done for the Scots during Trine's final drive of the game. Hite also recovered a key fumble in the third quarter which led to Alma taking the lead for good on the ensuing possession. 

 
MIAA Football Offense Athlete of the Week

Noah McMinn, Olivet
Senior, RB
Fishers, Ind.

Noah McMinn totalled 258 yards of offense in Olivet's 21-17 homecoming victory over Adrian Oct. 12. McMinn averaged 7.9 yards on 30 carries with one touchdown - a 34-yard run in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-winning score for the Comets; during that series, McMinn accounted for 59 yards gained. McMinn added 21 yards receiving in the win; overall, McMinn's 258 yards gained nearly eclipsed Adrian's total of 278 yards of offense.

 
MIAA Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week

Sam Allbritten, Hope
Senior, K
Warsaw, Ind.

Sam Allbritten, playing collegiate football for the first time this fall, was 7-for-7 on extra points and also converted on a 24-yard field goal in Hope's 52-33 win over Albion Oct. 12. Allbritten's field goal came in the second quarter and was the first score of 24 consecutive points by Hope.

MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

Darby Scott, Kalamazoo
Sophomore
Plymouth, Mich.

Darby Scott shot the lowest round during a blustery and cold final round of the MIAA season, carding a five-over 77 Oct. 12 at Bedford Valley. Scott's effort on Saturday, paired with a 78 during the Fall Final first round, capped an MIAA season with an 81.5 scoring average, good for fifth in the MIAA and garnered Scott first-team All-MIAA honors. Scott becomes the first Kalamazoo golfer since 2000 to garner first-team All-MIAA accolades.

MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Garrison Mast, Alma
Senior, GK
Grand Haven, Mich.

Garrison Mast was in goal for a 2-0-0 week for Alma against MIAA foes to start conference play last week. Mast made six saves, all in the second half, of Alma's 4-2 win over Albion Oct. 12, which handed the Britons their first loss since Sept. 13. Earlier in the week, Mast made one save in Alma's come-from-behind win over Olivet Oct. 8.
 

MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

Tanner Parrett, Alma
Senior, M
Muskegon, Mich.

Tanner Parrett scored in both of Alma's MIAA victories last week to help the Scots start 2-0-0 in MIAA play. Parrett started the week with the game-winning goal against Olivet Oct. 8, shaking the net in the 88th minute on an unassisted effort. Parrett then scored the game's first goal in Alma's 4-2 victory over Albion Oct. 12, converting in the 26th minute.

MIAA Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Ayverie Giller, Adrian
Senior, GK
Grand Ledge, Mich.

Ayverie Giller anchored Adrian's defense in two MIAA shutout wins last week to keep the Bulldogs atop the MIAA standings. Giller made a season-high 11 saves against Kalamazoo Oct. 12 on the way to a 2-0 victory. Earlier in the week against Calvin Oct. 9, Giller tallied three saves in 90 minutes of work on the way to a 2-0 win. The shutouts were the second and third of the season for Giller.
 

MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

Eve Davis, Adrian
Freshman, F
Canton, Mich.

Eve Davis had at least one point in three Adrian victories last week, including two MIAA wins. Davis scored in the 53rd minute in Adrian's 2-0 win over Calvin Oct. 9 and then assisted on an insurance goal in the 53rd minute against Kalamazoo Oct. 12. Davis capped the week with a two-goal effort in Adrian's 9-0 win over North Park Oct. 13, hitting in the 29th and 54th minutes.

MIAA Men's Diving Athlete of the Week

Grant Williams, Hope
Junior
East Grand Rapids, Mich.

Grant Williams was a two-time winner on the boards at a season-opening meet against Saginaw Valley State and Kalamazoo Oct. 12. Williams hit the Regional Qualifying mark on the 3-meter board to win the event with a score of 295.55; Williams also won the 1-meter event with a score of 246.00.

 
MIAA Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Daniel Keith, Hope
Junior
Saline, Mich.

Daniel Keith swam in five relay events at Hope's season-opener at Oakland University Oct. 12, leading off four of those relays. Keith's individual times included a 1:43.65 in the 200 free, 52.69 in the 100 back, 21.56 in the 50 free, and 47.17 in the 100 free.

MIAA Women's Diving Athlete of the Week

Eve Petrie, Kalamazoo
Sophomore
East Lansing, Mich.

Eve Petrie was the top MIAA finisher on the 3-meter and 1-meter diving boards at Saginaw Valley State Oct. 12. Petrie was second overall on the 3-meter (186.90) and third on the 1-meter (197.45) to start the season.

 
MIAA Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week

Tarah Lang, Hope
Freshman
Marshall, Mich.

Tarah Lang had a strong start as a collegiate swimmer, starting with the lead leg of Hope's 800 Free Relay team at the Golden Grizzly Relays Oct. 12. Lang's leadoff 200 free time of 1:59.11 ranks seventh in the first week of Division III competition. Lang also swam the lead on Hope's 300 Back Relay (3x100s) in 1:02.41, the lead on 1500 Free Relay (3x500) in 5:27.06 and the anchor in the 200 Free Relay (25.25).

MIAA Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Sara Majerle, Alma
Sophomore, OH
Rockford, Mich.

Sara Majerle hit .307 - well above a .213 season average - in two MIAA victories for Alma last week. Majerle had 17 kills to go with 16 digs, four service aces, and two blocks in Alma's 3-2 win over Albion Oct. 8. Majerle then added a second double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs to go with three service aces in a three-set win at Saint Mary's Oct. 12.
 

MIAA Volleyball Specialist Athlete of the Week

Tracy Westra, Hope
Sophomore, S
Clarendon Hills, Ill.

Tracy Westra averaged 5.83 assists per set in a 2-0 week for Hope against MIAA foes. Westra had 24 assists in a three-set win over Trine Oct. 12 despite playing only three rotations. Earlier in the week, Westra had 11 assists to go with three kills and two blocks in a three-set victory against Oct. 8.
