MIAA Athletes of the Week - September 16, 2019

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 12 student-athletes selected as its Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on September 15, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Jonathan Ellis, Calvin
Junior
Baltimore, Md.

Jonathan Ellis placed 11th individually and ninth among collegiate competitors Sept. 13 at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational. Ellis ran the 8K course in 25:19 as the top NCAA Division III runner. Ellis helped the Knights finish fifth in a field of 23 teams with 138 points.

MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Michelle Koetje, Calvin
Senior
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Michelle Koetje placed 26th at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Friday with a 6K time of 22:37 as the top NCAA Division III competitor. Calvin, the the only Division III school at the event, finished 12th as a team with 341 points.

MIAA Football Defense Athlete of the Week

Simeon Washington, Trine
Senior, LB
Toledo, Ohio

Simeon Washington registered 10 total tackles, all solo efforts, in Trine's 35-20 win at Bluffton Sept. 14. Washington's tally included four tackles for loss for 21 yards, with three sacks; two of the sacks came on back-to-back efforts during Bluffton's opening possession. Washington added a forced fumble in the win, which improved Trine to 2-0 on the year.

MIAA Football Offense Athlete of the Week

Mason Opple, Hope
Senior, QB
Hudsonville, Mich.

Mason Opple guided the Flying Dutchmen offense in posting the team's highest point total in 100 years in Hope's 80-6 win over Defiance Sept. 14. Opple completed 10 of 13 passes for 263 yards; five of those completions resulted in Hope touchdowns of 22, 56, 41, 61, and 19 yards. Opple added 21 rushing yards in the home opener.

MIAA Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week

Tyrone Collins, Albion
Freshman, KR/DB
Bradenton, Fla.

Tyrone Collins scored Albion's first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2002 with a 94-yard return to start the second half in Albion's 48-26 win at Franklin Sept. 14. Collins' effort is third-longest in NCAA Division III this season; Collins is also second nationally with 54.8 yards per kickoff return. Collins also contributed defensively, coming up with eight solo tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks.

MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

Jackson Jones, Kalamazoo
Junior
Bloomfield, Mich.

Jackson Jones led Kalamazoo with a 74 at the first MIAA Jamboree Sept. 9 at Hope, before shooting 71-76-147 to tie for third place at the Irish Hills Intercollegiate Sept. 13-14 in Jackson, Mich.

MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

Summer Stillson, Saint Mary's
Junior
Nappanee, Ind.

Summer Stillson tied for medalist honors at the first MIAA Jamboree Sept. 14 at Alma, carding a 74 to set a new MIAA individual record at Pine River Golf Course (along with teammate Hunter Kehoe) to break the previous record by two strokes. As a team, Saint Mary's scored 312 to set a new MIAA standard at the Alma course (318, Hope, 2014).

MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Andrew Aragon, Olivet
Sophomore, GK
Grand Blanc, Mich.

Andrew Aragon went 2-0-0 in two starts last week for Olivet, aiding the Comets to two road wins last week. In Olivet's 2-1 win at Defiance Sept. 11, Aragon made a season-high 10 saves, with five coming in each half. Aragon then made nine saves in Olivet's 3-2 win at Rockford Sept. 13.
 

MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

Joshua Rosendale, Olivet
Junior, F
Dimondale, Mich.

Joshua Rosendale registered a pair of two-goal games last week in Olivet's 2-1-0 road week. Rosendale started with both of Olivet's goals in a 2-1 win at Defiance Sept. 11, with the game-winner coming in the 29th minute after scoring the game's first goal in the 21st minute. Rosendale then shook the nets in the third minute against Rockford Sept. 13 and added a second tally in the 29th minute.

MIAA Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Ashley Oldham, Alma
Sophomore, D
Gilbert, Ariz.

Ashley Oldham helped Alma to a 1-0-1 week on the road. Oldham and the Alma defense held Franklin to just four shots on goal on the way to a 2-0 win; in that game, Oldham tallied an insurance goal in the 49th minute. The day previous against Anderson, Oldham played all 110 minutes of Alma's 1-1 draw on the road; Alma's defense allowed just five shots on goal in those 110 minutes, including no shots on goal in the two overtime sessions.

MIAA Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Madison Munger, Trine
Junior, OH
Indianapolis, Ind.

Madison Munger aided Trine to a 2-1 effort at the Hanover Tournament Sept. 13-14, earning All-Tournament team honors. Munger averaged 5.2 points per set thanks to 4.82 kills per set. Against Franklin Sept. 14, Munger tallied 21 kills, 21 digs, two blocks and a service ace in a 3-2 Trine win; in that match, Munger tied a Trine record with 78 attack attempts. Munger had 17 kills in a three-set win over Capital Sept. 13.

MIAA Volleyball Specialist Athlete of the Week

Sarah DeVries, Calvin
Senior, S/MH
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Sarah DeVries averaged 4.1 assists, 2.0 digs, and 1.3 blocks in Calvin's 3-0 week. Against Christopher Newport Sept. 14, DeVries dished out 16 assists to go with nine digs and four blocks in a 3-1 Calvin victory. DeVries also had 14 assists and five blocks against Messiah Sept. 13 in a three-set win. DeVries added a .412 hitting percentage with 5.1 kills per set in Calvin's 10 sets last week.
