MIAA Athletes of the Week - September 3, 2019

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the 10 student-athletes selected as its Athlete of the Week, for the week of competition ending on September 1, 2019. 
 
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
 
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition. 

MIAA Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Nick Hoffman, Hope
Sophomore
Holland, Mich.

Nick Hoffman won the Bill Vanderbilt Invitational Aug. 31, leading the entire race and finishing with a time of 26:38.2 to cross the 8K line with an 11-second margin against a 38-runner field. Hoffman aided Hope to a second-place team finish.

MIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Anastasia Tucker, Hope
Freshman
Midland, Mich.

Anastasia Tucker was the top Hope finisher and second overall at the Bill Vanderbilt Invitational Aug. 31 in Tucker's first intercollegiate race. Tucker ran the 5K course in 18:36.5 and aided Hope to a first-place team finish.

MIAA Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

Kasen Anderson, Calvin
Sophomore
Stillwater, Minn.

Kasen Anderson tied for second overall, finishing one shot off the lead, at the 13-team, 75-golfer Lou Collins Invitational hosted by Olivet Aug. 30-31. Anderson started the two-day event with a one-under 71, which was tied for the second-lowest score of the day; Anderson then followed with a one-over 73, leading Calvin's climb to fifth-place overall.

MIAA Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

Morgan Yates, Alma
Freshman
Shepherd, Mich.

Morgan Yates had a strong collegiate debut for Alma, finishing as the medalist of the Labor Day Classic Aug. 31-Sept. 1 with a two-round 157 to win by two strokes. Yates started with a tournament-tying low of five-over 77 Aug. 31 that included three birdies, and then added an eight-over 80 to aid Alma to a second-place finish in the five team event.

MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Luke Kastran, Kalamazoo
Sophomore, GK
Rochester Hills, Mich.

Luke Kastran opened the 2019 season with a shutout victory between the pipes for Kalamazoo as the Hornets defeated Ohio Wesleyan, 1-0, at home Aug. 30. Kastran saved all nine shots on goal to tie a career-high in saves set last season.
 

MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

Grant Perrine, Adrian
Sophomore, M/F
Schoolcraft, Mich.

Grant Perrine was involved in three of Adrian's first five goals in the Bulldogs' 6-2 win at Franklin Sept. 1. Perrine assisted on Adrian's goal in the 31st minute and then scored an unassisted tally in the 45th minute. Perrine then assisted on Adrian's first goal of the second half in the 50th minute.

MIAA Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week

Jordanne Ellingboe, Hope
Junior, GK
Grand Haven, Mich.

Ellingboe made a career-high 10 saves in No. 15 Hope's 0-0 draw with No. 3 Washington-St. Louis Aug. 31 in a contest where the visiting Bears out-shot Hope 27-6. Ellingboe started the season with a seven-save effort in the Flying Dutch's 2-2 draw with George Fox, including two in the second overtime.

MIAA Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week

Rose Stackhouse, Saint Mary's
Sophomore, F
St. Charles, Ill.

Rose Stackhouse was involved in all five Saint Mary's goals and scored both game-winning strikes in the Belles' 2-0 week. At Bluffton Aug. 30, Stackhouse scored both goals for the Belles, including the game's decisive goal in the 45th minute. Against Earlham Sept. 1, Stackhouse again struck twice, first shaking the nets in the third minute before adding what proved to be the game-winner in the 67th minute; Stackhouse assisted on Saint Mary's goal in the 34th minute.

 


MIAA Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Sarah DeVries, Calvin
Senior, MH/S
Grand Rapids, Mich.

Sarah DeVries was named the Ohio Northern Tournament Most Valuable Player after aiding No. 2 Calvin to a 3-0 start to the season, including wins against two top 25 teams. Against No. 23 Ohio Northern, DeVries had a match-best 17 kills to go with 11 assists and eight digs in Calvin's 3-1 win. Against No. 13 Illinois Wesleyan, DeVries was error-free on 14 attack attempts and finished with 10 kills, nine assists, five digs, and five blocks. For the week, DeVries hit .492 and averaged 4.9 points per set.
 

MIAA Volleyball Specialist Athlete of the Week

Madelyn Notenbaum, Olivet
Senior, S
Hudsonville, Mich.

Madelyn Notenbaum was named the Beloit Buc Classic Most Valuable Player in Olivet's 4-0 weekend. Notenbaum averaged 6.3 assists and 3.31 digs per set while adding 21 total kills, six blocks, and five service aces. Against Northland Aug. 30, Notenbaum was just shy of a triple-double with 19 assists, 17 digs, and eight kills.
