The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on May 5, 2019.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition.
Jason Schroeder, Adrian
Senior, P
Kimball Twp., Mich.
Schroeder was part of two Adrian wins last week, helping the Bulldogs in capturing their 11th consecutive MIAA title. Schroeder started the week with a two-hit effort in six innings on the way to aiding Adrian to a 3-0 win over Trine May 1, striking out five. For the week, Schroeder had a 1.29 ERA in 7.0 innings.
Dugan Darnell, Adrian
Senior, IF
Northville, Mich.
Darnell had a hit in all five Adrian games last week, aiding the Bulldogs in securing the MIAA Championship. Against Hope May 4, Darnell went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI to help in a 13-9 Adrian win. In the series opener against Hope May 3, Darnell blasted the first grand slam by Adrian since 2016 to vault the Bulldogs to a 5-2 win.
Brayden Blackburn, Hope
Freshman, LSM
Muskegon, Mich.
Blackburn helped Hope to win their first-ever MIAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament title with the game's decisive goal against Albion May 4, scoring with 3:57 remaining in regulation. For the championship game, Blackburn finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Against Calvin in the semifinals May 1, Blackburn gathered five ground balls to go with one caused turnover in Hope's 15-3 win.
Ethan Pinto, Hope
Freshman, Attack
Grand Rapids, Mich.
Pinto aided the Hope offense on the way to the Flying Dutchmen's first-ever MIAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Title. Against Albion May 4, Pinto assisted on Hope's second fourth-quarter goal, giving Hope their first lead of the fourth quarter with 10:03 to play. Pinto had one goal, three ground balls, and one caused turnover in Hope's 15-3 semifinal win against Calvin May 1.
Alexis Robinson, Albion
Freshman, Goalie
Agoura Hills, Calif.
Robinson made 20 saves on the week in anchoring the Albion defense on the way to the team's MIAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament title. Robinson stopped nearly 57 percent of shots faced; in Albion's 13-10 semifinal victory over Calvin, Robinson made a season-high 13 saves on 23 shots.
Chrystelle Lopez, Albion
Freshman, Midfield
Van Nuys, Calif.
Lopez produced seven goals and four assists in the MIAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament to help Albion secure the tournament title. Lopez piled up five goals and an assist as Albion edged Hope, 16-14, in the championship game May 4. Lopez also helped Albion maintain possession against Hope, collecting four groundballs and controlling the draw twice.
MIAA Softball Pitcher of the Week
Ellie Borst, Calvin
Sophomore, P
Hudsonville, Mich.
Borst was 2-0 with a save in the circle last week as the Knights went 3-0 at the MIAA Tournament last week, capturing their first MIAA Tournament crown since 1997. Over the three games, Borst struck out 13 batters while walking only three. Borst posted an earned run average of 0.89 while compiling two complete-game pitching performances.
MIAA Softball Position Player of the Week
Abi Colon, Calvin
Junior, IF
Caledonia, Mich.
Colon batted .455 (5-for-11) with seven RBI and two home runs during Calvin's MIAA Softball Tournament championship run, including a 2-for-4 effort with one home run and four RBI in Calvin's opening win over Hope May 3. Colon then added another home run on a 2-for-4 effort in Calvin's 7-1 victory against Saint Mary's May 4. Colon was also flawless in the field, not committing an error in 14 fielding chances.
Alex Cadigan, Kalamazoo

Cadigan went 3-0 for the Hornets in aiding Kalamazoo to capturing the MIAA Men's Tennis Tournament championship May 4. Cadigan started the week with an 8-0 win at three doubles against Adrian May 2. Then, in Kalamazoo's 5-0 win over Hope May 4, Cadigan was part of the Hornets' first point with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles before winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Amanda Bandrowski, Hope
Junior
Traverse City, Mich.
Bandrowski was a two-time winner for Hope in the Flying Dutch's 5-0 MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament championship win over Kalamazoo May 3. Bandrowski was part of an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles before a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. In the semifinals against Calvin May 1, Bandrowski also part of two wins, at No. 1 doubles (8-2) and No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2).
