The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on April 21, 2019.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition.
Mitch Shedlowsky, Albion
Senior, P
Waterford, Mich.
Shedlowsky threw a complete game win to lift Albion in a 3-1 win over No. 13 Adrian April 19. Shedlowsky spread out four hits while striking out seven over the seven-inning outing in Albion's key MIAA win to keep the Britons alive for a postseason berth. After allowing two hits and one run in the first inning, Shedlowsky settled down and ended the contest with a 1-2-3 seventh, with two strikeouts.
Mason Opple, Hope
Junior, OF
Hudsonville, Mich.
Opple hit a walk-off single in Hope's 4-3 win over Trine April 19, keeping Hope in the lead in the MIAA standings with a 15-1 record. Opple went 4-for-6 in that game, with a stolen base and two RBI. For the week, Opple hit .500 (6-for-12) with one double, two stolen bases, and four RBI as the Flying Dutchmen improved to 25-1 overall.
Nick Ludka, Kalamazoo

Saginaw, Mich.
Ludka was the medalist at the first round of the MIAA NCAA Qualifier April 20, shooting a two-under 70 to help the Hornets take a three-stroke lead through the first of three rounds. Earlier in the week, Ludka shot 78 to tie for 14th place at the Knight Invitational.
Hunter Kehoe, Saint Mary's
Sophomore
Traverse City, Mich.
Kehoe was the medalist of the first round of the MIAA NCAA Qualifying Tournament April 18, shooting a three-over 75 to win the round by five strokes as the lone golfer to shoot in the 70s. Kehoe's effort aided Saint Mary's to take a 29-stroke lead through the first of three rounds.
Marshall VanBelkum, Hope

Rockford, Mich.
VanBelkum was a key defensive factor in Hope's 25-8 win over Adrian April 20. VanBelkum went 12-of-14 in faceoff opportunities and gathered 12 ground balls to aid in the transition. VanBelkum also added one goal in the contest.
Jace Conley, Albion
Freshman, Attack
Waterford, Mich.
Conley led Albion with six goals in the Britons' 21-4 win at Kalamazoo April 20. Conley added eight ground balls in the victory to keep Albion unbeaten in MIAA action heading into the final week of regular season play.
Destiny Okon, Albion
Freshman, Midfield
Van Nuys, Calif.
Okon helped hold two Albion MIAA opponents to eight goals in a 2-0 week for the Britons. In Albion's 11-8 win at Kalamazoo April 16, Okon gathered five ground balls while adding three draw controls and three caused turnovers along with scoring three goals. Okon then added seven draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers in a 12-8 victory over Hope April 20.
Carly Schwarz, Albion

Schwarz had a team-best two assists to go with two goals, seven ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers in Albion's 12-8 win against Hope April 20. Earlier in the week, Schwarz had team bests of four goals and three assists in Albion's 11-8 victory over Kalamazoo April 16, while also adding seven ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
MIAA Softball Position Player of the Week
Paige Cubberly, Adrian
Senior, IF
Toledo, Ohio
Cubberly batted .571 on the week, going 4-of-7 at the plate with two doubles in Adrian's doubleheader sweep of Kalamazoo April 19. Cubberly scored three runs while batting in four for the day. In the opening 10-1 five-inning win, Cubberly also earned the win, allowing four hits while striking out three.
Tytus Metzler, Kalamazoo

Rockford, Ill.
Metzler went unbeaten on the week for the Hornets, aiding Kalamazoo clinch at least a share of the MIAA title this week. Metzler went 2-0 in Kalamazoo's 8-1 win over Hope, starting with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles before a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles. Against Albion April 20, Metzler paired with Alex Cadigan for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, then going 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
MIAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Madeline Brouwer, Calvin
Sophomore
Hudsonville, Mich.
Brouwer went 2-0 both at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles to aid in back-to-back 9-0 wins for Calvin in MIAA play. Brouwer did not drop a game in doubles play on the week; Brouwer then went 6-0, 6-1 in both No. 2 singles matches against Adrian and Olivet.
Noah McClellan, Trine

McClellan won the triple jump at the Otterbein Twilight Invitational April 19, reaching 12.62m for a season-best effort.
Simon Detmer, Calvin
Freshman
Chicago, Ill.
Detmer, who has right side paralysis due to cerebral palsy, broke the National USA Adaptive Track and Field Under 20 age record for the 1,500m run while competing at the Al Owens Classic April 20. Detmer ran in 4:51.04, breaking the previous record of 4:52.0.
Renee Miller, Calvin
Sophomore
Marlette, Mich.
Miller turned in the top distance in the MIAA this season with a mark of 5.41m in the long jump at the Grand Valley State Al Owens Classic. Miller finished seventh overall at the event as the top Division III finish.
Annie Needs, Calvin
Sophomore
Chicago, Ill.
Needs finished the 3,000m steeplechase in 11:44 to place sixth overall and the top NCAA Division III time at the Grand Valley State Al Owens Classic April 20. Needs' time was 12 seconds off a season-best, which ranks second in the MIAA.
