The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced the student-athletes selected as Athletes of the Week, for the week of competition ending on March 31, 2019.
The MIAA Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by coaches following one week of competition, and selected by a panel of MIAA Sports Information Directors, including the MIAA Director of Media Relations.
This week's winners are listed below with their respective achievements during last week's competition.
Max Gaishin, Hope
Sophomore, P
Stevensville, Mich.
Gaishin threw a four-hit complete game in Hope's 14-1 win at Calvin March 26. In seven innings of work, Gaishin struck out four while giving up just four singles to aid Hope in a 5-1 week against MIAA foes.
Mason Opple, Hope
Junior, OF
Hudsonville, Mich.
Opple went 13-for-23 with three doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI, and eight runs scored in a 5-1 week in MIAA play for the Flying Dutchmen. Opple had a .957 slugging percentage on the week, which included a multi-base hit in five of six games. In Hope's March 26 doubleheader with Calvin, Opple went 6-for-8 with seven RBI while scoring four runs.
Jackson Jones, Kalamazoo

Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Jones was the medalist golfer vs. Sand Hills Community College March 25, shooting an event-best 75 at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
Hunter Kehoe, Saint Mary's

Traverse City, Mich.
Kehoe was the tournament medalist at the 10-team Alice Lloyd Invitational March 30-31, shooting the lowest rounds of the 42-golfer field on both days to win by four strokes. Kehoe shot 77-80=157 at the seven-team event in Richmond, Ky. to aid Saint Mary's in the team championship.
Joseph Steigmeyer, Trine

Steigmeyer made 15 saves for a 71.4 save percentage in Trine's 10-6 win at MSOE March 30. Thirteen of Steigmeyer's saves came in the first three quarters before a 5-1 fourth quarter by Trine put the game away. Steigmeyer also gathered two ground balls in the win.
Neil Orr, Trine

Lombard, Ill.
Orr was involved in seven of Trine's 10 goals in the Thunder's 10-6 win at MSOE March 30. Orr posted five goals and two assists, including three unassisted goals and an assist during Trine's critical 5-1 fourth quarter. Three of Orr's goals were man-up scores. Orr also added two ground balls in the win.
Kate Kelly, Saint Mary's

Orland Park, Ill.
Kelly had an all-around effort for Saint Mary's in a 22-1 road win March 30, registering four ground balls and three caused turnovers while winning five draw controls in the MIAA opener for both teams. Earlier in the week, Kelly had nine ground balls, four caused turnovers, and five draw controls in Saint Mary's 21-10 win over Carthage March 27. Kelly's weekly stats included nine goals and six assists.
Genevieve Schneemann, Calvin

Farmington, Mich.
Schneemann fueled Calvin's 16-5 MIAA-opening win over Adrian March 30 with six goals and two assists, adding a ground ball in the win. Against Aquinas March 26, Schneemann scored on all eight of her shots on the way to a nine-point game (8g, 1a). For the week, Schneemann had a 77.8 shooting percentage and scored on all three free position shots.
MIAA Softball Position Player of the Week
Haydn Terwilliger, Alma

Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
Terwilliger went 4-for-7 in Alma's MIAA-opening doubleheader with Calvin March 28, including two home runs and four RBI. In Alma's 7-4 win in the opener, Terwilliger went 2-for-3 with two runs, one home run, two RBI and a walk. The shortstop also was perfect on six fielding opportunities.
MIAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Henry went 2-0 at No. 2 singles last week, including a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-8 win over No. 3 Emory's Hayden Cassone (No. 41 singles ranking) March 28. Henry defeated No. 12 Sewanee (University of the South)'s Jack Gray 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles March 26. Henry went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles, with an 8-7 win against Sewanee.

Gulli moved up to No. 3 singles last week, resulting in a 4-0 singles record and a 7-1 record for the week. Gulli went 2-0 in both singles and doubles in Saint Mary's wins over Trine March 30 and Olivet March 31. Against regionally-ranked Wheaton March 29, Gulli scored Saint Mary's lone point with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 in at No. 3 singles.

VanHouten was a three-time winner in the throws at Calvin's meet with Hope March 29. VanHouten hit season bests in winning the shot put (14.47m), discus (49.05m), and hammer (56.01m); VanHouten ranks in the top 45 nationally in all three events, improving his national ranking with last week's performances in the shot and hammer.
Jordan Davis, Adrian

Davis won the 110 hurdles at the Hanover Invitational March 30, finishing in 15.17; that time ranks 24th nationally. Davis also won the 400 hurdles in 57.18 and ran a leg of Adrian's 4x100m relay that finished in 42.15, ranking 15th in NCAA Division III.

Achien'g broke the Hope record in the triple jump at the Hope-Calvin dual March 29, hitting 11.32m to rank 11th in NCAA Division III. Achien'g also won the long jump with an effort of 5.39m, which ranks 34th nationally. Achien'g also finished first in the 200m dash (27.41), fourth in the high jump (1.42m), sixth in the javelin (23.33m), and ran a leg on Hope's 4x100m relay (51.60).

Vince ran the fastest 10,000m race thus far in NCAA Division III with a time of 34:26.36 at the Raleigh Relays March 29. Vince finished 15th in the 10,000m Invite race, which included NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, and unattached competitors.
