Sarah Woods of Kalamazoo claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women’s tennis Player of the Week honors on Tuesday for matches through May 1.
Woods, a senior from Oconomowoc, Wis., finished a prolific career at Kalamazoo with a 3-0 week in singles play to improve to 8-0 this season and end her career at 30-0 all-time in MIAA action for the discipline. Woods dominated in a trio of singles victories in straight sets, never giving up more than two games in a stanza. The No. 19 player in the country knocked off top players from Saint Mary’s (6-2, 6-1) and Albion (6-1, 6-1). Woods also defeated No. 33 Nancy Benda of Hope 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Woods teamed up with Sabrina Dass at the No. 1 spot. The duo won two of three matches on the week. The Hornets beat Saint Mary’s 8-2 and toppled Albion 8-1. The tandem also dropped a tight match in extra games to Hope, 9-7.
The award marks Woods’ second weekly honor this season after collecting accolades on March 7.
