No. 26 Calvin Men’s Cross Country Team Earns MIAA Title

CHARLOTTE, Mich. – The No. 26 Calvin men’s cross country team earned the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championship at the Broadway Acres Golf Course on Saturday.

The Knights came into the MIAA Championship race with a first-place finish at the league’s jamboree held on Sept. 26 in Holland. Calvin capitalized on its opportunity to clinch the men’s championship title on Saturday by placing all five of its scorers in the top eight.

The Jamboree counts one-third toward the final standings while the Championship meet counts two-thirds toward the final standings. With its two wins in the league competitions, Calvin finished as the overall champion with 24 points, three ahead of second-place Hope.

The Flying Dutchmen took second overall with 21 points. Trine ran third with 18 points, and Albion placed fourth at 15 points. Adrian (12), Olivet (9), Kalamazoo (6), and Alma (3) rounded out the team standings.

Zachary Nowicki of Calvin earned Medalist honors at the Championship and claimed the Most Valuable Runner award as well. He finished the 8K course in a time of 25:13.

Nowicki was one of five Knights on the eight-runner All-MIAA First Team. Fellow Calvin teammates Andrew Philipose, Mark DeJong, Jeff Meitler and Ethan Anderson also achieved first team honors. Mitch Clinton of Albion and a pair of Hope runners, Joseph Beemer and Ben Zank filled out the first team ranks.
