Historian Tom Renner has had an association with the MIAA for more than half a century. He was league publicist and statistician from 1967 until 2008 when he was named league historian. Renner served as associate vice president for public and community relations for MIAA member Hope College from 1967-2013. In his honor, the MIAA established the Sports Information Associate Award for students in 2008. He was editor of a national award-winning book, "Celebrating a Century of the Student Athlete" which marked the centennial year of the MIAA in 1988. A highlight of his career was serving as a volunteer in media relations at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. In retirement he has authored a history of Hope College athletics, "In Pursuit of Excellence: A History of Intercollegiate Athletics at Hope College, 1970-2020".
