Hope Maintains Lead Through Winter 2018-19 MIAA Commissioner's Cup Standings

FREELAND, Mich. - Top-two finishes in all three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's winter sports helped Hope College maintain the lead in the MIAA Commissioner's Cup standings through the winter championships.

The winter update is an unofficial look at MIAA Commissioner's Cup standings. The award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league's 23 sports, 11 in women' sports, and 12 in men's sports; each school counts its top eight finishes by gender. The winter update includes each team's MIAA finish in eight men's and seven women's sports.

Along with an MIAA title in swimming and diving, Hope added second-place finishes in women's basketball and indoor track & field to add 25 points to their women's total. Steady performances in men's sports helped Hope own a 106-97.5 lead on second-place Calvin. Following in third is Trine with 90.5 points, bolstered by three MIAA Championships in women's basketball, men's basketball, and women's indoor track & field.

Albion finished no worse than third in all three women's sports and added an MIAA Championship in men's swimming and diving to hold fourth place in the standings with 89 points. Alma bounded up the board with strong finishes in wrestling (T2nd) and women's basketball (4th) to move up from seventh to fifth with 61 points.

Rounding out the standings are Adrian (sixth, 60.5 points), Olivet (seventh, 60 points), and Kalamazoo (eighth, 48 points).

Trine's men's sports continued their stronghold, finishing no worse than second in their three men's sports offerings in the winter. Calvin surpassed Hope in the men's standings, aided by an MIAA title in indoor track and field and a second-place finish in swimming and diving.

On the women's side, Albion closed the gap with Calvin as the Knights held on to second place, while Hope increased their lead in the women's standings, 59-48.5.
