MIAA Honors 92 Programs With Team GPA Accolades for 2017-18

FREELAND, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Wednesday (August 1) the 92 teams that earned the MIAA Team GPA Award for the 2017-18 academic year.

The MIAA Team GPA Award is presented to conference athletic teams that achieve a 3.300 or better GPA for an academic year. Grade-point averages are calculated at the end of the academic year.

Three athletic departments tied for the most teams honored: Calvin, Hope, and Kalamazoo each featured 14 teams on the Team GPA list. Also reaching double figures for programs honored were Trine (12) and Olivet (10).

For the third consecutive year, seven of Saint Mary’s eight MIAA-sponsored sports achieved recognition for an MIAA-best 87.5 percent. Kalamazoo was second by percentage, with 14 of 18 eligible teams (75.0 percent).

Of the 92 programs honored, 14 surpassed a 3.600 team GPA for the 2017-18 academic year, with four reaching the 3.700 plateau. Teams surpassing 3.700 in 2017-18 were Olivet women's soccer, Adrian women's soccer, Hope men's golf, and Calvin women's cross country.

The MIAA's nine women's soccer programs once again surpassed the 3.300 team GPA standard, with all nine volleyball programs doing so in 2017-18. Along with women's soccer MIAA champion Hope and volleyball champion Calvin, 17 of the 24 teams that won all or a share of 22 MIAA championships also earned Team GPA Award honors.

The MIAA has presented the Team GPA Award each year since the 1998-99 academic year. Of note, both Calvin’s women’s cross country and Hope women’s cross country are the only programs to earn the Team GPA Award 20 consecutive academic years.
