FREELAND, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Monday (July 15) the list of 1,358 student-athletes from the conference’s nine member institutions recognized to the 2018-19 MIAA Academic Honor Roll. The total of 1,358 student-athletes recognized shatters the previous best of 1,284 from the 2017-18 academic year, and marks the fourth consecutive year the total of honorees surpassed 1,200 student-athletes.
To be recognized, student-athletes must reach a 3.5 grade-point average for the academic year and earn a varsity letter in an MIAA-sponsored sport.
Seven of nine member institutions had an increase in the total of honored student-athletes from the academic year previous. Alma had the largest increase, with a 24.1 percent leap with 137 student-athletes honored.
Along with Alma, Adrian (+14.7 percent), Kalamazoo (+10.4 percent), Calvin (+10.2 percent), Trine (+8.7 percent), Albion (+2.9 percent), and Saint Mary's (+1.7 percent) had an increase of total student-athletes to reach the standard of academic and athletic success.
Overall, Hope had the highest total of Academic Honor Roll selections with 235; Calvin (187), Trine (172), and Albion (170), were second, third, and fourth, respectively.
A record 171 MIAA student-athletes posted a 4.0 grade-point average during the 2018-19 academic year.
Along with academic success, MIAA student-athletes showed their strength in competition as 238 were multi-sport letterwinners, and 98 earned a varsity letter in three sports in 2018-19.
