Around the MIAA

Adrian

Adrian competed at the two-day Pete Willson Invitational hosted by Wheaton College, where the Bulldogs finished 20th out of 34 schools with 37.0 points… Junior Noah Nieman (149 pounds) and sophomore Derick Duvall (165) both placed sixth in their respective weight classes…Junior Devon Pingel went to the 197-quarterfinals to finish the tournament at 2-2 after exiting via a medical forfeit…Sophomore Zach Altman led the Bulldogs with a 3-2 record at 157, where he was eliminated in the consolation fourth round…Adrian returns home to the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center on Thursday for Senior Night against non-conference opponent Defiance… At 11-5 in dual matches in 2019-20, according to available school records the team will be aiming to clinch its first-ever 12-win season…in the latest national rankings, Nieman is “honorable memtion” or No. 20 by D3wrestle.com, sophomore Isaiah Espinoza is No. 4 at 285 by D3wrestle and No. 8 by the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association, and Pingel is No. 5 D3wrestle/No. 7 NWCA…with Espinoza’s debut in the NWCA rankings, this marks the first time in school history that two Bulldogs appear in the same week… Espinoza’s leads the Bulldogs with a 26-3 record win nine pins, Pingel tops the team with 11 pins and has a 24-3 mark, while Nieman is 23-7 overall.


Alma

Senior Brendan Ladd (Ortonville, Mich.) was selected as the Most Valuable Wrestler of the MIAA as he currently holds a 14-1 record on the year. The two-time All-American also repeats as the best wrestler in the 141 weight class. Sophomore Lucas Brewer (Belleville, Mich.) was selected to the All-MIAA team in the 174 weight class. The second-year wrestler went undefeated in conference duals. Sophomore Trent Lashuay (Saint Johns, Mich.) competed in the Wheaton Invitational unseeded and placed fourth out of 28 wrestlers in the 133 weight class.


No. 16 Olivet

Olivet tied for ninth-place in a field of 34 NCAA Division III schools at the Wheaton/Pete Willson Invitational. Senior Cole Hersch placed fourth in the 157-pound bracket. Senior Haydn Kinjorski posted a 5-2 record to finish fifth in the 174-pound bracket. Sophomore Owen Miller also had a 5-2 record and was seventh at 285 pounds. Junior Trevor Piggott had a 3-3 record to finish eighth at 197 pounds.


Trine

Competed at the annual Pete Wilson Invitational hosted by Wheaton (Ill.) College...Anthony Eberle and Nick Miller led the Thunder individually with 3-2 records for the tournament...Eberle's three victories in his 125-pound bracket were all by pinfall...Miller recorded a pin in the 174-pound bracket to go along with a major decision and decision.
