Hope Defends MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament Championship Title for Twelfth-Straight Season

Hope College women's tennis won its twelfth-straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament title after notching a 5-0 victory over Saint Mary's College on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

The Flying Dutch began the afternoon by sweeping their doubles competition.

At the top doubles flight, 2024 MIAA Most Valuable Player Amanda Lopykinski and partner Sullivan Moran won 8-3 against Alayna Campbell and Evalyn Demblans-Dechans.  Annika Weeber and Miyako Coffey notched an 8-2 victory over Emma Kealy and Anna Gardner at No. 2 doubles.  At No. 3 doubles, Madison Wei and Phoebe Walker went 8-1 against Grace Clearwater and Katie Hunter.

Both Wei and Walker earned the final two points to clinch the Hope win.  At No. 5 singles, Wei won 6-1, 6-0 versus Clearwater.  Walker earned a No. 6 singles win of 6-0, 6-1 against Hunter.

At No. 1 singles, Lopykinski was up 6-3, 2-0 against Campbell.  Kealy had a 6-3, 3-0 lead for the Belles at No. 2 singles versus Moran.  Demblans-Dechans (6-4) and Weeber (6-1) split sets at the third singles flight when the match was stopped, while Coffey (6-2) and Gardner (5-3) nearly splt sets at No. 4 singles.

The Flying Dutch receive the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship which will be held May 20-27 at the Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri.  The women's tennis teams selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 6, at noon.  The press release announcing qualifying individuals will be announced on Wednesday, May 8.
