Calvin's Magnussen and Chao Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans®

2021 CoSIDA Division III Women's At-Large Academic All-Americans

Recently graduated Calvin seniors Hannabeth Magnussen and Hannah Chao of the Calvin women's swimming and diving team have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

They have both been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team in the women's at-large division.

They are also both receiving CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the first time.

The women's at-large division which includes the sports of lacrosse, rifle, skiing, fencing, swimming and diving, tennis, golf, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, ice hockey and wrestling.

A native of Oakdale, California, Magnussen recently completed a standout four years of competition with the Calvin women's swimming and diving team. A graduate of Ripon Christian High School, Magnussen was named the MIAA Women's Most Valuable Diver this past March, earning the award for the second straight year. At the MIAA Championships, she repeated as league champion on both the one and three-meter diving boards.

This past spring, she was named a 2021 College Swim Coaches Association All-American, earning the award for the second straight year.

As a junior, she qualified for the NCAA III Central Diving Regional where she placed seventh on the three-meter board and sixth on the one-meter board to qualify for the NCAA III Championships.

Although the 2020 national meet was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Magnussen was later named a Division III All-American by the College Swim Coaches Association of America. 

A two-time All-MIAA selection, Magnussen helped the Calvin women's swimming and diving team capture MIAA team titles in both 2018 and 2020.

In the classroom, Magnussen was a biochemistry major while also holding a minor in Latin. She was a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and an eight-time member of the Calvin Dean's List. She was also named to the College Swim Coaches Association Scholar All-America Team in both 2020.

A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Chao is receiving CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the first time. A graduate of North Farmington High School, Chao recently wrapped up a standout four years in the pool. During her tenure with the Knights, she helped lead Calvin to MIAA team titles in 2018 and 2020. She was a four-time All-MIAA selection and landed Division III All-America honors from the College Swim Coaches Association of America in 2020 and again in 2021.

Chao is the Calvin record holder in the 100 backstroke (56.10) and is a part of Calvin's school-record relay team in the 400 medley relay (1:44.19).

Individually, Chao was a two-time MIAA champion in both the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. This past March, she also swam on Calvin's 200 medley and 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams that captured MIAA titles.

During the 2020-21 season, she posted the fourth-fastest time in Division III in the 100 backstroke (56.22), the third-fastest time in the 200 backstroke (2:02.86) and the ninth-fastest time in the 200 IM (2:06.22). She also was a part of several nationally-ranked Calvin relay teams this winter as its 400 freestyle relay team was ranked sixth (3:30.91), its 800 freestyle relay ranked seventh (7:39.69), its 200 medley relay team ranked fourth (1:44.72) and its 400 medley relay ranked sixth (3:54.09).

Chao is a two-time national qualifier. As a sophomore in 2019, she earned Division III Honorable Mention All-America honors. In 2020, she was qualified for the Division III National Championships in multiple events. The national meet was later cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic but she was subsequently named a CSCAA Division III All-American in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.

Chao is a two-time CSCAA Scholar All-America recipient, receiving the honor in 2019 and 2020. As a freshman in 2018, she was named a CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-American. In 2019 and 2020 she was named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

An eight-time Calvin Dean's List recipient and a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, she was graduated from Calvin last spring with a degree in biology. She plans to attend medical school in the future.

With Magnussen and Chao receiving CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, Calvin has now had 141 Academic All-America citations all-time.
